What is an interconnect engineer?

Interconnect Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain the physical and logical connections between different components in electronic systems, such as data centers, telecommunications networks, or semiconductor devices. They ensure that different systems or devices can communicate efficiently and reliably, handling tasks like cable management, signal integrity, and bandwidth optimization. Their work is critical in industries where large-scale data transfer and connectivity are essential, including IT infrastructure, telecommunications, and chip manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interconnect engineer?

To thrive as an Interconnect Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and signal integrity, often supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with electronic design automation (EDA) tools like Cadence or Mentor Graphics, as well as knowledge of industry standards and testing protocols, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with cross-functional teams and resolving complex design challenges. These skills ensure reliable, high-performance interconnect solutions that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by interconnect engineers when working on large-scale data center projects?

Interconnect Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing the complexity of high-density cabling, ensuring low-latency signal integrity, and coordinating with multiple teams to meet strict project timelines. Balancing evolving hardware requirements with existing infrastructure can also be demanding, as it requires careful planning and flexibility. Additionally, maintaining compliance with industry standards and troubleshooting connectivity issues under tight deadlines are frequent aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Interconnect Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectInterconnect EngineerNetwork Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNPBachelor's in Computer Science, certifications like Cisco CCNA, CCNP, or CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing hardware connections, working in labs or manufacturing settingsManaging and troubleshooting network infrastructure, working in IT or data centers
Industry UsageTelecommunications, electronics manufacturing, hardware developmentIT services, telecommunications, enterprise networks

Interconnect Engineers focus on designing and testing hardware connections between electronic components, while Network Engineers manage and troubleshoot network systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in related industries, but their daily tasks and environments differ significantly.

Job Title: Manager, Interconnect Engineering

Job Code: 42570

Job Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days- totaling 80 hours worked- and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a people-focused engineering leader to manage Interconnect Engineering within Mechanical Engineering. This role leads engineers responsible for cable, harness, connector, and related interconnect solutions that support ruggedized electronic and electro-mechanical hardware across development, production, and sustainment.

The Manager translates business priorities into short-term operating plans, aligns staffing and execution to program needs, and ensures the team delivers technically sound, manufacturable, and reliable interconnect designs. The role combines direct leadership of engineers with hands-on engagement in design direction, process improvement, customer support, and cross-functional problem solving.

Essential Functions:

Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of interconnect engineers supporting multiple programs, product lines, and customer commitments.

Plan team workload, staffing, and priorities for proposals, new product development, qualification efforts, production support, and sustainment activities based on business needs and skill mix.

Provide technical direction for cable and harness design, connector selection, shielding and grounding approaches, wire and cable specification, routing, packaging, and interface definition.

Ensure interconnect designs satisfy system, electrical, mechanical, environmental, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and schedule requirements while maintaining clear design intent and documentation quality.

Partner closely with systems, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, test, and program teams to resolve interface issues, drive design maturity, and support successful product execution.

Oversee the creation and review of drawings, models, wiring documentation, parts lists, build instructions, and related design artifacts to ensure accuracy, consistency, and configuration control.

Drive standard work for peer reviews, design reviews, lessons learned, parts selection, supplier engagement, and documentation quality to improve repeatability and reduce execution risk.

Support issue resolution during hardware build, qualification, production, and fielded product support through structured root-cause analysis and timely corrective action.

Contribute to proposal development, basis-of-estimate creation, technical risk assessments, and customer presentations related to interconnect design capability, maturity, and execution plans.

Hire, onboard, mentor, and assess team members; provide clear feedback, performance management, and development plans that strengthen both technical depth and leadership capability.

Champion practical improvements in tools, workflows, automation, and engineering methods that increase team efficiency without sacrificing technical rigor or compliance.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field.

Experience supporting aerospace, defense, ruggedized electronics, or other high-reliability products with demanding environmental requirements.

Experience with cable and harness standards, qualification testing, supplier coordination, and transition of designs from development into production.

Familiarity with 3D CAD, wiring or harness documentation tools, PLM systems, and configuration-managed engineering documentation practices.

Knowledge of electronics packaging, open architecture hardware, and design-for-manufacturing principles as they apply to interconnect solutions.

Engineering leadership experience, including direct people management, workload planning, performance evaluation, coaching, and development of experienced professionals.

Strong background in the design and development of cable, harness, connector, or related interconnect solutions in a product development or manufacturing environment.

Demonstrated ability to translate system-level and interface requirements into practical engineering direction, documentation, design standards, and build support.

Working knowledge of connector and cable selection, EMI or shielding and grounding concepts, packaging and routing constraints, and manufacturing considerations for high-reliability hardware.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical direction and risk to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a US Secret clearance if needed.
