How much do interaction design jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for interaction design in the United States is $59.50, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47.60 and $73.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is interaction design?

Interaction design (IxD) is the practice of designing interactive digital products, environments, systems, and services. It focuses on creating engaging interfaces with well-thought-out behaviors and actions that enable users to effectively achieve their goals. Interaction designers consider elements like user flows, feedback, and usability to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience. By understanding how people interact with technology, they bridge the gap between users and digital products.

How does an interaction designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Interaction Designers work closely with product managers, developers, and visual designers throughout the design process. They participate in brainstorming sessions, communicate design decisions, and iterate on wireframes and prototypes based on feedback from stakeholders and user testing. This collaborative environment ensures that user needs, technical feasibility, and business objectives are all balanced to deliver an effective user experience. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as Interaction Designers often serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interaction designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interaction Designer, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, prototyping, and usability testing, often backed by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and prototyping tools, as well as knowledge of accessibility standards, is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Interaction Designers translate user needs into intuitive digital experiences. These competencies ensure that products are both functional and enjoyable, leading to higher user satisfaction and business success.

What is the difference between Interaction Design vs User Experience Design?

AspectInteraction DesignUser Experience Design
FocusDesigning interactive elements and how users engage with productsOverall experience, including usability, accessibility, and satisfaction
SkillsWireframing, prototyping, understanding user flowsResearch, user testing, visual design, and strategy
Work EnvironmentCollaborates closely with UI designers and developersWorks across research, design, and product teams

Interaction Design primarily focuses on creating engaging and intuitive interactive elements within a product, while User Experience Design encompasses the broader overall experience, including usability and emotional satisfaction. Both roles overlap but serve different aspects of the design process, often working together to deliver a seamless user journey.

Are interaction designers in demand?

Interaction designers are in high demand as companies focus on creating user-friendly digital experiences. Skills in user research, prototyping, and tools like Sketch or Figma are valuable, and employment opportunities are expected to grow with increased emphasis on UX/UI design across industries.

Job description

At SwanTech AI, our mission is to revolutionize the semiconductor hardware and software development lifecycle through intelligent, AI-powered tools. We combine machine learning, large language models (LLMs), and deep domain knowledge in chip design to build platforms that make complex engineering workflows intuitive, efficient, and collaborative.

SwanTech AI's products bridge the gap between AI innovation and engineering usability, empowering semiconductor teams to interact with design systems and data through powerful, human-centered interfaces.

About the role

We're hiring a UX / Interaction Designer to define and craft the next generation of user experiences for SwanTech's AI-driven semiconductor applications.

In this role, you'll shape how engineers and technical users interact with complex data, AI models, and design automation tools โ€” turning technical depth into clarity, speed, and delight.

Youโ€™ll work closely with front-end engineers, AI researchers, and product leads to design interfaces that balance usability, performance, and trust in AI-powered workflows. Your work will directly influence how the worldโ€™s most advanced semiconductor teams design, debug, and deploy their systems.

If youโ€™re passionate about designing for technical users, creating intuitive experiences for AI systems, and pioneering humanโ€“AI interaction in engineering, this is the place for you.

You will:
  • Lead the design of user interfaces and interaction patterns across SwanTechโ€™s product ecosystem.
  • Translate complex semiconductor and AI workflows into clear, approachable, and efficient user experiences.
  • Build high-fidelity prototypes for testing, iteration, and developer handoff.
  • Design intuitive visualizations and control systems for AI-assisted design and analysis tools.
  • Collaborate closely with front-end engineers to ensure technical feasibility and design fidelity in implementation.
  • Conduct user research, usability testing, and workflow studies with engineering users to refine experiences.
  • Create and maintain design systems and interaction libraries that ensure consistency across products.
  • Apply principles of humanโ€“AI interaction design, emphasizing transparency, explainability, and control.
  • Work cross-functionally with AI, product, and semiconductor domain teams to ensure design aligns with business and user goals.
How to be successful:
  • 4+ years of experience as a UX Designer, Product Designer, or Interaction Designer for complex or technical products.
  • Proven experience designing data-rich or workflow-heavy interfaces, preferably for technical users (engineering, scientific, or developer tools).
  • Expertise in interaction design, information hierarchy, and visual design fundamentals.
  • Strong ability to prototype interactive experiences using tools such as Figma, Framer, or code-based prototyping (React, HTML/CSS/JS).
  • Understanding of AI/ML concepts and curiosity about designing for AI-assisted decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills โ€” able to articulate design decisions to both designers and engineers.
  • Thrives in an iterative, fast-paced startup environment that values experimentation and learning.
  • Passionate about turning technical complexity into clarity and simplicity.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience designing tools or platforms for semiconductor, EDA, or engineering software domains.
  • Familiarity with LLM-based interfaces, AI visualization, or humanโ€“AI interaction design research.
  • Knowledge of front-end technologies (React, TypeScript) for improved collaboration and prototyping.
  • Background in data visualization, workflow design, or developer experience (DevEx).
  • Experience contributing to design systems or open-source design resources.
  • Remote (US / India).
Why join SwanTech AI
  • Define the user experience of AI in semiconductor design โ€” a frontier where usability meets intelligence.
  • Collaborate with world-class AI engineers, chip designers, and UX technologists.
  • Shape products that empower engineers and accelerate global innovation.
  • Competitive compensation, equity options, and opportunities for growth in a pioneering AIโ€“semiconductor company.
