We are looking for a skilled Construction Inspector to join our team and support a variety of transportation and infrastructure projects across the region. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in field inspection, materials testing, and construction oversight, along with a strong understanding of industry standards and state and federal regulations. This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys working in the field, collaborating with contractors and project owners, and ensuring construction is completed safely, accurately, and in compliance with standards. In this position, the candidate will:
  • Monitor all phases of construction and work closely with contractors throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Build strong working relationships with project owners and keep them informed of significant project issues.
  • May oversee and provide guidance to other construction inspectors assigned to the project (when applicable).
  • Inspect construction work on roads, bridges, culverts, structures, waterlines, sanitary sewers, and other infrastructure to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Perform concrete testing (yield, air, slump), beam and cylinder tests, compaction and moisture testing of aggregates and soils, and sampling of asphalt at plants, quarries, and job sites.
  • Conduct level circuits for as built plans, settlement monitoring, and elevation verification; compute cross sections using level and rod.
  • Perform quantity calculations and maintain accurate records of inspection activities.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, schematics, and specifications.
  • Collect, code, analyze, and maintain test data and inspection documentation.
  • Assist with job control tests and review specifications and policies to ensure testing procedures remain current.
  • Provide mentorship to junior inspectors when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience. High School diploma required with a degree in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, or construction management preferred. (Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.)
  • IDOT construction inspection certifications
  • Strong technical decision making skills and ability to apply regulations and standards to ensure compliance.
  • Familiarity with state and federal construction regulations for roads, bridges, sewers, and related infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in inspection and surveying practices.
  • Thorough understanding of construction material quality requirements.
  • Strong mathematics background, including trigonometry and geometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Skilled in documenting and analyzing test results.
  • Proficiency with testing, surveying, and inspection equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment & Expectations:
  • Work is primarily performed outdoors at project sites in all weather conditions.
  • Physical activity may include lifting, carrying, walking, digging, and use of hand tools.
  • Must pass all required inspection, sampling, and certification tests.
  • Reliable transportation and an appropriate personal vehicle are required for travel to project sites.
  • Occasional office work may involve prolonged sitting or standing, computer use, and document review.
  • Receives close supervision on unusual or complex issues; general review is provided for overall work quality and compliance.
  • Expected to complete assignments on time with oversight from project supervisors and managers.
  • Frequent interaction with contractors, project owners, material producers, and internal staff to exchange information and coordinate work.
