General Information:
The Department of Computer Science within the College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) at James Madison University invites applications for a one-year visiting lecturer position to serve in the Information Technology (IT) Major to begin August 2026.
The B.Sc. in Information Technology (IT) is one of two undergraduate degrees offered by the Department of Computer Science at JMU, with a focus on computer networking, cybersecurity, web technologies, data science/machine learning and mobile development. The IT major accepted our first freshman class in Fall 2022 and has more than 250 students and is rapidly growing. The JMU Computer Science department is a dynamic and supportive community with 32 full-time faculty members and approximately 900 undergraduate majors across computer science and information technology majors. We also offer an online M.S. Degree in Computer Science concentration in Cybersecurity. We are dedicated to maintaining a culture that balances excellence in teaching and small class sizes with opportunities for faculty and student research. We have many active clubs and organizations including TechLink, Women in Technology, Robotics, Forensics, Unix Club, Cyber Defense, and a student ACM chapter. Duties and Responsibilities:
Applicants from all areas of specialization are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be able to teach foundation-level and junior/senior level courses in the IT major. We especially welcome candidates with expertise in one or mor of the following areas:
-Cybersecurity
-Computer Networking
-Information Security
-Web Technologies
-Machine Learning
-Database Systems
-Web and Mobile Development.
Candidates will demonstrate a commitment to creating and supporting a welcoming learning environment that supports the Computer Science Department, CISE and University mission. The successful candidate should be able to teach one or more of these classes, the networking/security-focused IT courses from the B.S. in Information Technology curriculum, foundation classes and the IT ethic class; with a typical teaching load 4/4 for a visiting lecturer: IT 203 - Information Security and Privacy, IT 215 - Introduction to Telecommunications and Computer Networking, IT 302 - Societal and Ethical Issues in Information Technology, IT 313 - Community Projects, IT 333 - Advanced Networking for Information Technology, IT 460 - Advanced Cybersecurity, IT 461 - Internetworking, and/or IT 465 - Wireless Networking and Security.
Qualifications:
A doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc., etc.) or ABD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field at the time of employment is preferred. Candidates with at least a master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a closely related field and commensurate experience will also be considered. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide highquality undergraduate teaching and who can engage students in meaningful scholarly or creative activities.
