What is an insurance agent?

Insurance agents are professionals who help clients select and purchase insurance policies that meet their needs. They act as intermediaries between insurance companies and customers, providing advice on coverage options, policy features, and premiums. Insurance agents may specialize in different types of insurance, such as life, health, auto, or property insurance. They are responsible for explaining policy terms, answering client questions, and assisting with claims processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Agent, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, risk assessment, sales techniques, and usually a state-issued license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, quoting systems, and underwriting platforms is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, active listening, and persuasive communication help agents build trust and close sales. These skills and tools are essential for meeting client needs, maintaining compliance, and achieving sales targets in a competitive industry.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in insurance underwriting, and how can they be managed?

Insurance underwriters often encounter challenges such as assessing complex risks, keeping up with evolving regulations, and balancing customer expectations with company policies. Staying current with industry trends, leveraging data analytics tools, and collaborating closely with agents and actuaries can help manage these challenges effectively. Additionally, ongoing training and strong communication skills are key to making informed decisions and maintaining a productive workflow.

Job description

Account Manager (AM) — Trucking Insurance | $220K OTE | San Francisco

  • Pay: $220K OTE — $110K base + $110K commission on your book (50/50 split, uncapped, paid monthly)
  • Where: Downtown San Francisco, in office 5 days a week — 5-minute walk from Montgomery BART
  • Hours: Mon–Fri, 9–5. Start ASAP.
  • Benefits: Health benefits included
  • Must have: US work authorization (no sponsorship)

Who we are

  • Corgi is an AI-native insurance carrier — $4B valuation, $374M raised, HQ in San Francisco
  • We launched trucking insurance in July 2026 — auto liability, cargo, physical damage — in 30+ states
  • We quote in minutes and answer every in-appetite quote within 24 hours. The rest of the industry takes weeks.

What you'll do

  • Own every broker the moment it's signed — from a single office to a national agency with 250 of them
  • Run the 90-day ramp: week-one onboarding, live quote clinics, first monthly review, day-90 business review
  • Drive activation — 60%+ of trained producers submitting within 30 days — and roll out multi-office accounts wave by wave
  • Own the service side so sales stays on revenue: submissions, underwriting back-and-forth, endorsements, declines, tickets
  • Run quarterly business reviews: book performance, claims, tier path in dollars ("you're $2M from Platinum")

What we're looking for

  • 2+ years in account management or customer success where you owned retention and growth of a book
  • Organized enough to run a dozen ramps at once; direct enough to pause a rollout that misses its gate
  • Comfortable presenting to producers and agency principals

License and insurance experience

  • Not required. No P&C license? We'll get you licensed in your first weeks — study time and exam fees on us. No insurance background? We'll teach you.
  • Already have it? You start ahead. Any P&C seat counts — CSR, account manager, producer, carrier, MGA, wholesaler.
  • Big bonus: trucking brokerage. A freight brokerage, a trucking-focused agency, or a transportation wholesaler — you already know what a producer needs from a carrier: COIs, endorsements, loss runs, fast answers.

Why this seat

  • A book that compounds — brokers we sign carry 5–250 offices each
  • Commission tied to bound premium across your book, not just a salary
  • Documented rollout playbook and a named underwriter fast lane for your top accounts

Corgi is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants are considered without regard to any legally protected status.
