What is an insurance data engineer?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge technical and business needs while ensuring data quality. These abilities are essential for building robust data pipelines and enabling accurate data-driven decision making within insurance organizations.

Job description

Job Overview

Zeno Group is hiring a data engineer to join our team. This role reports into Zeno's AI & Innovation practice and works closely with the Data & Intelligence team. As the first dedicated data engineer at Zeno, you will shape the tools, architecture, and practices that define how the organization works with data going forward.

Responsibilities

Transition data infrastructure to a modern architecture built around AWS. Improve and scale existing client data pipelines while keeping client deliverables running smoothly. Support the Snowflake migration by documenting current schemas, validating that the new architecture preserves existing functionality, and testing with real client data. Build the data layer for AI products, including ingestion pipelines, APIs, and programmatic access layers that connect data sources to LLM interfaces.

Configure Fivetran connectors for paid media data, build pipelines for sources Fivetran doesn't cover, and write validation and transformation steps. Connect data to BI tools by building views and clean tables that analysts can query directly without writing complex SQL.

Support ongoing client work alongside clientโ€‘facing analysts, from adjusting tables for new data cuts to standing up pipelines for new clients.

Qualifications

6+ years of handsโ€‘on data engineering experience. You have built pipelines, debugged data issues, and written clean SQL in a production environment. Comfortable with cloud data warehouses and modern tooling. Experience with at least one of Redshift, Snowflake, or BigQuery. Understanding of ETL/ELT patterns. Proficient in Python for data work. AWS experience preferred. You can hold your own in architecture conversations and work well with analytically strong teammates. Familiarity with LLM tooling, vector databases, or document processing pipelines is a plus. Consulting or agency experience is a plus.

Technical Environment
  • Current: Snowflake, Fivetran, Tableau, Alteryx, Excel
  • Target: AWS (Redshift, S3, Lambda), Fivetran, Tray.ai, Tableau/PowerBI/Looker, Hex
Adjacent Technologies
  • Claude/LLM integrations via MCP
  • Custom dashboard development
Data Types
  • Paid media performance (Meta, Google, TikTok)
  • Earned media (Muckrack, Cision)
  • Employee engagement event data (Amplitude)
  • Creator/influencer campaign data
