What is an insurance data engineer?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Job description

Citi is looking for a Senior Big Data Developer to design, build, and scale high-performance data platforms that power critical business decisions across our global financial institution. In this senior-level role, you will lead the development of complex data engineering solutions, working closely with cross-functional technology teams to deliver robust systems built on Java, Confluent Kafka, Apache Flink, and modern big data technologies. Your work will directly shape how Citi processes and operationalizes data at scale — driving measurable impact across products, platforms, and business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities-

  • Design and develop scalable big data pipelines and distributed systems using Java and Apache Kafka to support high-volume, real-time data processing.
  • Architect and implement data solutions that align with enterprise-wide technology standards, ensuring system reliability, performance, and maintainability.
  • Architect, deploy, and manage containerized big data workloads and microservices on Citi's Enterprise Container Solution (ECS) (built on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform) and native Kubernetes environments.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to identify system enhancements that enable new product capabilities and process improvements.
  • Define and enforce development standards across coding, testing, debugging, and deployment to maintain engineering quality across the team.
  • Analyze complex business and system processes to resolve high-impact technical challenges, delivering innovative and practical engineering solutions.
  • Mentor and guide mid-level developers and analysts, providing technical direction and distributing work to ensure delivery goals are met.
  • Evaluate technical and business decisions with a clear understanding of risk, ensuring all solutions meet regulatory, compliance, and data governance requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: 6+ years of hands-on experience in software or application development, with a strong focus on big data engineering, systems analysis, or distributed systems.
  • Core Language Expertise: Deep expertise in Java development, with demonstrable experience building large-scale, production-grade data applications.
  • Streaming & Messaging: Practical, hands-on experience with Confluent Kafka and Apache Flink (or Apache Spark Streaming) for real-time data streaming and event-driven architectures.
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Strong hands-on experience deploying and managing applications in Kubernetes (K8s) and enterprise container platforms such as ECS (Enterprise Container Solution) or Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Infrastructure & Platform Knowledge: Solid understanding of container orchestration concepts, including pod lifecycles, service networking, volume mounts, and resource allocation.
  • Project Delivery: Proven ability to lead and deliver complex technical projects from design through to production deployment.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership capability, with experience mentoring developers and coordinating technical delivery across teams.
  • Communication: Clear and effective communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both engineering and non-engineering audiences.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with big data frameworks such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Flink in a financial services or enterprise environment.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and containerized deployment environments.
  • Exposure to data governance practices, compliance frameworks, or regulatory technology contexts

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree/University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • Master’s degree preferred
