Insurance Data Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge technical and business needs while ensuring data quality. These abilities are essential for building robust data pipelines and enabling accurate data-driven decision making within insurance organizations.

How does an Insurance Data Engineer typically collaborate with actuarial and underwriting teams?

Insurance Data Engineers work closely with actuarial and underwriting teams to ensure that the data infrastructure supports accurate risk assessment and pricing models. They often translate business requirements from these teams into technical specifications, build data pipelines to source and clean relevant data, and assist in implementing predictive analytics tools. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as data engineers help bridge the gap between raw data and actionable insights for decision-making. This teamwork not only streamlines workflow but also enables continuous improvement of insurance products and customer experience.

What are Insurance Data Engineers?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

Job description

About AssistRx
AssistRx transforms the patient journey through technology-helping patients access life-saving therapies faster and more efficiently. Our platform connects patients, providers, payers, and manufacturers through secure, scalable, data-driven solutions that power better decisions and better outcomes across the healthcare ecosystem.
If you're passionate about building modern data platforms, working with large-scale cloud data systems, and applying data engineering best practices in a regulated healthcare environment, we'd love to talk.
Role Overview
AssistRx is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our Cloud Data Platform (CDP Architecture) team. This role is highly hands-on and focused on designing, building, and scaling our modern data platform-with Snowflake and dbt as core, non-negotiable technologies.
You will play a critical role in shaping AssistRx's enterprise data architecture, owning transformation logic, performance optimization, and data modeling patterns that support analytics, reporting, and downstream products across the organization.
This is not an entry-level or tool-learning role. We are looking for someone who can contribute immediately in a production Snowflake + dbt environment and help set technical standards for the broader data organization.
What You'll Do
Cloud Data Platform & Architecture
  • Design, build, and optimize Snowflake-centric data architectures to support enterprise analytics, reporting, and operational use cases
  • Own dbt transformation layers, including model design, testing, documentation, and deployment best practices
  • Implement scalable data modeling patterns (star schemas, data vault, dimensional models) aligned to business needs
Data Engineering & Pipelines
  • Develop and maintain reliable data pipelines integrating sources such as Salesforce, application databases, and external client data
  • Ensure data quality through validation, testing, monitoring, and observability frameworks
  • Optimize Snowflake performance and cost through query tuning, warehouse design, and efficient data modeling
Collaboration & Enablement
  • Partner closely with Analytics, BI, Product, and Engineering teams to deliver trusted, analytics-ready datasets
  • Contribute to architectural standards, code reviews, and best practices across the CDP team
  • Document data flows, models, and platform decisions to support long-term scalability and knowledge sharing
Governance, Security & Compliance
  • Ensure data pipelines and models meet PHI / PII / HIPAA compliance requirements
  • Support secure access patterns, role-based permissions, and data governance controls

Requirements
Required Qualifications
This role requires strong, hands-on experience in the following areas:
  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or backend data development
  • Advanced Snowflake expertise in a production environment (performance tuning, architecture, optimization)
  • Strong dbt experience building and maintaining transformation layers at scale
  • Expert-level SQL skills, including complex transformations and performance optimization
  • Experience designing and supporting cloud-based data platforms (Snowflake preferred)
  • Hands-on experience integrating data from SaaS platforms (e.g., Salesforce) and operational systems
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts for analytics engineering (version control, deployments, testing)
  • Strong understanding of data modeling best practices for analytics and reporting

Nice to Have (Not Required)
  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or regulated environments
  • Python experience for data engineering or automation
  • Familiarity with Azure-based data tooling (ADF, storage, compute)
  • Exposure to BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or ThoughtSpot

Why This Role Matters
  • You'll help define AssistRx's enterprise data foundation
  • Your work will directly impact executive decision-making, client reporting, and patient-centric solutions
  • You'll join a team that values clean architecture, strong engineering standards, and real ownership

Annual salary
Between the range from $90,000 - $125,000
Benefits
  • Supportive, progressive, fast-paced environment
  • Competitive pay structure
  • Matching 401(k) with immediate vesting
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, & short-term disability insurance
  • Opportunity to impact patient outcomes through data-driven healthcare technology.
  • Collaborative and mission-driven culture that values innovation and continuous learning.
  • Access to cutting-edge cloud technologies and modern data engineering tools.
  • Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and career growth opportunities
