What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Insurance Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a background in mathematics, finance, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as SQL, Excel, Python, and data visualization platforms, as well as knowledge of insurance-specific databases and certifications like CPCU or AIDA, is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting complex data and presenting insights to stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate risk assessment, data-driven decision-making, and effective support of business objectives in the insurance industry.

How does an Insurance Data Analyst typically collaborate with underwriters and actuaries?

Insurance Data Analysts frequently work alongside underwriters and actuaries to provide data-driven insights that inform risk assessment and pricing decisions. Analysts gather, clean, and interpret large sets of policyholder and claims data, then present actionable findings through reports or dashboards. Regular meetings and joint projects ensure that underwriters and actuaries have the most accurate, up-to-date information to make decisions, and that data models align closely with business needs. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this collaborative environment.

What does an Insurance Data Analyst do?

An Insurance Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing data related to insurance policies, claims, customer behavior, and market trends. They use statistical tools and software to identify patterns, assess risks, and provide actionable insights that help insurance companies make informed decisions. Their work supports pricing strategies, fraud detection, customer retention, and overall business performance. Insurance Data Analysts often collaborate with underwriters, actuaries, and business managers to optimize processes and improve profitability.

Job description

About magniX: Based in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, magniX is a pioneer in electric propulsion and battery technology for the aerospace industry. We're working to revolutionize how the world connects by transforming the way aircraft are powered. magniX has been at the leading edge of electric propulsion innovation for almost 20 years, and has successfully demonstrated our technology in flight. We are now on the path to take our proven technology and innovative products to market. Join us to be part of a passionate team that is ushering in a new era of aviation.
About the role: The Data Analyst role exists to make our data trustworthy. magniX operates across multiple systems - ERP, program management, and financial planning tools - and this analyst will be the person who understands how data flows between them, where it breaks down, and how to fix it. Working closely with our Program Analytics PM and Finance lead, you will own the data layer that makes everyone else's analysis reliable.
This is a build environment, not a maintain environment. If you are excited by the idea of creating structure where there isn't any yet - and doing it in an aerospace company that is redefining what electric flight looks like - this role is for you.
Primary Responsibilities:
Data Integrity & Source Understanding
  • Develop a working understanding of magniX's key data sources - ERP, program management systems, and financial planning tools - and how data flows between them.
  • Identify inconsistencies in data (e.g., project codes, cost center IDs, naming conventions) across systems and work with stakeholders to resolve them at the source.
  • Build and maintain basic data controls: validation rules, naming standards, and flagging logic to catch upstream errors before they propagate downstream.
  • Create and maintain a living data dictionary: document what key fields mean, where they come from, and who owns them.
Power BI Development & Maintenance
  • Build, maintain, and improve Power BI reports and dashboards supporting Finance, Program Management, and Operations.
  • Write and maintain Power Query (M) transformations to clean, shape, and stage data for reporting.
  • Partner with the Finance lead on financial model logic and own the technical implementation in Power BI Desktop.
  • Diagnose and resolve data load errors, schema mismatches, and query failures in the Power BI model.
  • Support the evolution of department-level dashboards into executive-level reporting tools.
Reporting & Analysis Support
  • Produce recurring financial and operational reports (actuals vs. budget, program cost tracking, variance analysis) with accuracy and on schedule.
  • Translate data into clear insights for non-technical stakeholders - program managers, finance, and senior leadership.
  • Support preparation of PSRs, PMRs, and QERs with accurate, well-structured data packages.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work alongside the Program Analytics PM to align data definitions, reporting standards, and dashboard strategy across programs and functions.
  • Engage with program managers and operations staff to understand their data needs and surface gaps early.
  • Proactively communicate data issues and their downstream impacts rather than waiting to be asked.
Required Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in data analysis, business intelligence, FP&A, or a closely related function.
  • Proficiency in Power BI, including report and dashboard development.
  • Hands-on Power Query (M) experience - ability to write, read, and debug M code, not just use the GUI.
  • Familiarity with data modeling concepts: fact vs. dimension tables, relationships, cardinality.
  • Financial literacy: ability to read and interpret a P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement; understanding of actuals vs. budget vs. forecast.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in an aerospace, defense, manufacturing or aviation environment.
  • FP&A background or experience supporting a finance function directly.
  • Exposure to ERP systems (SAP, Odoo)
  • Familiarity with SharePoint as a data source.
  • Familiarity with program financial reporting (EVMS, Earned Value, program cost tracking).
  • Exposure to project management tooling (MS Project, Unanet, or similar).
Location: Applicants must be willing and able to commute to magniX's location in Everett, Washington.
Compensation & Benefits
  • 100% company-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance (for employees & dependents).
  • 4 weeks paid vacation + 1-week annual end-of-year shutdown, sick time, and 11 paid holidays.
  • 401K retirement plan with industry leading 9.5% company contribution.
  • Company paid Life insurance, AD&D, Short-Term and Long-Term disability insurance
  • Catered lunches and quarterly company fun-day events!

Salary Range: $90k-$130k
E-Verify: magniX utilizes E-Verify for employment eligibility verification
Pre-employment Screenings: Employment with magniX is contingent upon satisfactory completion of pre-employment requirements including a background screen.
Export Control Compliance: This position may require access to export-controlled data. To meet export control compliance requirements, candidates must be a "U.S. Person" (U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees), or an appropriate export authorization by the U.S. Government may be required prior to such access. Employment, and the continuity of employment of non-U.S. persons, is contingent upon the company's ability to secure and maintain the necessary export control authorization.
Diversity and Inclusion: magniX is an equal opportunity employer. We value and embrace diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, age, or disability status.
(MS Project, Unanet, or similar).
