Job Description

Position Title: Claims Manager

Position Reports To: Director Risk Management / General Counsel

Position Summary

Non-Supervisory role, supporting mitigation of the organization's exposure to risk by formulating, developing, and coordinating all claims-related activities, as well as resolving bona fide claims promptly and within the cost parameters authorized by the organization's management. Implements programs to ensure the proper and efficient handling of claims, gathering of claims data for both record keeping and loss forecasting purposes, and estimating the financial value of open claims. Responsible for oversight of carrier and TPA adjusters and application of loss reduction techniques such as salvage, subrogation, and rehabilitation.

Essential Functions

Claims Management:

  • Workers Compensation: Coordinates with Director of Risk Management, Safety, Legal, Human Resources, and Operations to assess and administer worker's compensation claims, including adjusters, treatment plans, investigation, return to work, and other resolutions. Report claims timely to the insurance carrier with copy to broker.
    • General Liability: Works with Safety and Operations to investigate and prepare files on claims. Report claims timely to the insurance carrier with copy to broker. Manage and coordinate adjusters in consultation with Director of Risk Management/Legal.
    • Automobile and Property: Assesses and administers the organization's auto collision and property damage claims. Coordinate with Safety, Fleet, and Operations to identify and investigate claims. Report claims timely to the insurance carrier with copy to broker and assist in guiding the adjustment process.
    • Tracks all open claims by coverage and by jurisdiction, through resolution and provides regular updates on claims' development and cost.
    • Other claims activities including, but not limited to, bill coding and payment processing, as assigned.

Broker and Carrier Activities:

  • Timely reporting of claims and preserving the rights of the company under the insurance terms.
  • Manages the COI process
  • Oversight of OCIP and CCIP insurance processes and timely claims reporting
  • Supports the renewal process by gathering and reporting incurred claims data for each line of insurance requested
  • Coordinate with the broker to ensure that the carrier maintains an acceptable financial rating required by company

Assist Director Risk Management and the Legal Department:

  • Gather relevant documentation in response to claim subpoenas and discovery
  • Assists with claims administration of more complex claims
  • Assist with the insurance renewal submission by gathering updated claims information required for underwriting
  • Oversee receipt, review, and processing of claim related invoices
  • Support other risk management activities as requested

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (Risk Management, Business, or Finance preferred) with certification in AIC-M, CCP, ARM, CRIS, or CPCU
  • Three (3) years experience managing claims under the described coverage lines, preferably in the industrial services or construction industry across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to review and understand key coverage terms and claims provisions of insurance policies
  • Ability to work effectively across other company departments
  • Must understand financial implications of the claim adjusting process and protect the company's interests.
  • Time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and collaboration tools (Teams, SharePoint, Adobe/PDF)

Work Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.
