What is an installer apprentice?

Installer Apprentices are entry-level workers who assist experienced installers in setting up, repairing, or maintaining systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or other specialized equipment. They learn the trade through hands-on training and may attend classes or seminars to supplement their on-the-job experience. Installer Apprentices are responsible for following safety guidelines, preparing tools and materials, and supporting the installation process under supervision. Over time, they gain the skills and experience needed to advance to a fully qualified installer position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an installer apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Installer Apprentice, you need basic mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety procedures, and sometimes OSHA certifications are commonly required. Strong communication, reliability, and a positive attitude help set individuals apart in this hands-on role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, accurate installations and effective teamwork while building a successful career in the trade.

What are some common challenges installer apprentices face when starting out, and how can they be overcome?

NPC&M is seeking a motivated Apprentice Carpenter, based in New Hampshire, to join our growing team. This is an entrance-level, full-time, field-based role in which the Apprentice works as a helper alongside an experienced Facility Mechanic on service calls and, occasionally, small construction projects across New England. Under the Mechanic’s direct guidance, the Apprentice will assist with carpentry, drywall repair and installation, flooring (VCT, carpet tile, porcelain/ceramic tile), acoustic ceiling tile, wall coverings (FRP), concrete, and related tasks — building the hands-on skills and trade knowledge needed to perform the type of work NPC&M does every day. No prior construction experience required.

NOTE ON WORK SCHEDULE: This is a field-based position requiring travel to client job sites alongside an assigned Facility Mechanic. Candidates must be available for both day and night shifts - NPC&M makes every effort to distribute night shifts equitably and minimize overnight assignments per team member; however, flexibility to work days and nights according to client needs is a firm requirement of this role.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly under the supervision of an assigned Facility Mechanic, learning proper trade techniques and daily job procedures.

  • Assist with loading/unloading, handling, and maintaining tools, equipment, and materials, and keeping job sites clean and organized.

  • Daily communication/reporting to assigned Facility Mechanic, Facility Service Coordinator and/or Manager.

  • Assist with coordination of plans and layout of overall project.

  • Provide daily progress photos or before/after photos of work.

  • Provide daily and constant communication and field pictures.

  • Support coordination with customer needs as necessary.

  • Complete misc. carpentry, maintenance, flooring, drywall/framing, concrete, etc. tasks as directed, to support the Facility Mechanic and overall assignments.

Requirements | Skills
  • No prior construction experience required — this is an entrance-level position for candidates ready to learn the trade under an experienced Facility Mechanic.

  • Trade school or vocational training in carpentry/construction is a plus, but not required.

  • Excellent customer service skills set.

  • Clean driving record.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Basic computer skills: MS Outlook, MS Word, among others.

  • Travel as required to support assignments.

  • Night shift availability.

  • Qualified candidates are required to complete a criminal background check, driving background check and drug testing.

Qualifications | Experience
  • Driver's License (Required)

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)

  • OSHA 10 (Preferred)

Compensation
  • Annual salary range: $45,000 – $55,000, commensurate with experience.

  • Performance-based paid incentive.

Benefits
  • Hands-on mentorship.

  • Structured on-the-job training with an experienced Facility Mechanic, Superintendents and Project Managers.

  • Monthly cell phone allowance.

  • 2 weeks paid vacation after the first year of service

  • 8 paid holidays.

  • Participation in simple IRA retirement plan.

  • Company health, dental and vision insurance.

  • Travel compensation – outside of the New England area.

  • Company Training Programs – training reimbursements.

Location:
  • Manchester, NH

  • Remote position – the candidate is expected to be at the project/job location at all times.

  • Ideal candidate should be based in the Manchester, NH, area.
