Job description

Groundperson

Under the supervision of the area General Foreperson, this position will be responsible for switching, maintenance, and construction of substation equipment including implementation of all necessary protective measures for preventative and reactive maintenance duties and performing routine substation inspections. Provide an efficient and safe work environment for employees and contractors in strict accordance with all customer and company practices and procedures along with leadership for all Operator/EMJ apprentices.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Performs all work from the ground.
  • Clears work area around structures.
  • Excavates to assist in the installation of structures or cable as required by contract specification.     
  • Will have contact with public and private property owners to communicate work to be performed.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned by Foreperson relating to utility line work.
  • Assembles material on the ground to be installed by the lineperson or apprentice.
  • Will flag traffic.
  • Operates various tools for the work (various manual digging devices, wrenches, hammers, come a long, jack hammer and hand line etc.).
  • Working hours will extend into night and will exceed an eight hour day.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Pre-Screen

Physical Requirements:

  • RARE (up to 10%): stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing poles, reading, reaching, color vision, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, balancing, lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): sitting, kneeling, body twisting, sense of touch, seeing distant, climbing on/off truck, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., range of motion, depth perception, lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • FREQUENT (up to 66 %): standing, walking, manual dexterity, gripping, lifting, carrying.
  • CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): speaking clearly, seeing, hearing-speech range.
