Overview
Shimmick is seeking a talented Field Engineer to be based in the greater Los Angeles area. In this role, you will initially support the North Hollywood to Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, a progressive 19-mile transit corridor connecting North Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale, Eagle Rock, and Pasadena. Featuring 22 new stations, the BRT line is designed to provide faster and more reliable transit options, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality by utilizing zero-emission electric buses.

Southwest Division
Shimmick's Southwest Division, headquartered in Irvine, California, focuses on large public owners in Southern California, across water resources, water treatment, transportation, and transit markets. Over the past decade, the division has grown tremendously, securing major projects, including the $828 million Gerald Desmond Bridge, the first cable-stayed vehicular bridge in California.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Displays knowledge and abilities to evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to meet basic engineering and construction specifications.
  • Displays applications of sound professional judgment on details of work.
  • Independently performs walk-downs and inspections of installed commodities to assure conformance with specifications and design.
  • Performs quantity surveys for tracking and reporting.
  • May provide technical direction to drafters, technicians, and surveyors.
  • Support daily field operations on heavy civil construction sites, including excavation, structural concrete, grading, and utility installation.
  • Assist with interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and work plans for field crews.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and assist in tracking material usage and equipment needs on site.
  • Monitor work for compliance with safety standards, quality expectations, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate with survey teams for layout, elevations, and as-built data collection.
  • Prepare daily field reports, photo documentation, and work logs to support project tracking and billing.
  • Assist with resolving field issues by working with superintendents, subcontractors, and design engineers.
  • Participate in job site safety meetings, audits, and ensure PPE and safety protocols are being followed.
  • Support preparation and tracking of RFIs, submittals, and minor change requests from the field.
  • Use construction software and tools to report progress and support communication between field and office teams.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field plus 2+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Heavy civil transportation infrastructure project experience (roadway, street improvement, earthworks, bridge structures, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous heavy civil construction experience in a self-perform environment.

The salary range for this position is between $95,000-$115,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
