Located on GW's campus in downtown D.C., The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum celebrates art, history and world cultures. Public programs and exhibitions are inspired by diverse collections of global textiles and local history. Resources for students and scholars include the peer-reviewed The Textile Museum Journal, the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center and the Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies.
Position Specific Summary
This student communications position is for the role of social media lead (Instagram) at the museum. The social media lead plays an important role in engaging and growing the museum's online community of world-culture enthusiasts on Instagram. Working as part of a small communications team, you will research and develop content that celebrates textile traditions from communities around the world, as well as interacting with followers and tracking metrics and trends for the museum Instagram account. This position is for the academic year and reports to the head of museum marketing, communications and visitor experience. Responsibilities include the following:
- Collaborating with the communications team to develop editorial calendar for the museum Instagram account.
- Creating engaging text captions, images and videos that support strategic objectives and complement the museum's other digital channels.
- Expanding museum's Instagram following and proactively engaging with followers.
- Identifying and coordinating with guest contributors.
- Identifying and pursuing partnerships with Instagram influencers in coordination with the digital communications and visitor experience specialist.
- Monitoring, reporting and responding to customer service issues.
- Recording and monitoring performance metrics for museum Instagram account.
- Researching industry trends in social media.
- Additional support as needed, including support for other museum social media channels.
This position will work approximately 20 hours per week from August 24, 2026 to May 2027.
Standard Position Description
The student will provide assistance in management and planning for print, web, social media, and/or other digital content. Tasks may include: reviewing existing departmental websites and suggest edits, executing a marketing plan, website maintenance, updating and/or developing key materials and opportunities used to promoting departmental expertise and practices, editing or creating videos, and assisting in the management of social media channels, including writing and posting original content. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

- Exceptional writing skills, attention to detail, ability to deliver creative content (text, image, video)
- Comfort using social media platforms
- Undergraduate degree or 2+ years relevant experience
- Demonstrated interest in the arts
- Microsoft Office, Google platforms and image editing software experience
