Inspector Internship information

What is an inspector internship?

Inspector internships are temporary positions designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in inspection-related work. Interns typically assist experienced inspectors in evaluating compliance with regulations, quality standards, or safety protocols in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or environmental services. These internships offer hands-on training, exposure to workplace procedures, and opportunities to learn industry-specific tools and documentation. Inspector internships can be valuable for those considering a career as a professional inspector, as they help build relevant skills and professional networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an inspector intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Inspector Intern, you typically need attention to detail, basic knowledge of inspection processes, and relevant coursework or enrollment in a related field such as engineering or quality assurance. Familiarity with inspection tools, measurement equipment, and reporting software is often required, and some internships may prefer candidates with OSHA or safety certifications. Strong observational skills, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately evaluating compliance, ensuring quality standards, and supporting the inspection team effectively.

What types of projects or inspections might I be involved with during an inspector internship?

As an Inspector Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of inspection tasks depending on the industry—these may include site visits for construction projects, quality checks on manufacturing lines, or compliance reviews for safety protocols. Interns often work closely with experienced inspectors, learning how to document findings, use inspection tools, and communicate results to relevant teams. This hands-on exposure not only enhances your technical skills but also gives you a better understanding of regulatory standards and reporting procedures. Collaborative work with engineers, project managers, and compliance officers is common, providing valuable networking opportunities and a holistic view of inspection processes.

Home inspector internships are in moderate demand as the industry grows with increased home sales and property inspections. Interns typically need to develop skills in building systems and may pursue certifications like the InterNACHI Certified Inspector to enhance job prospects.

Job description

Job Description

About Us
DBI Consultants are construction experts who specialize in evaluating damaged structures. Our mission is simple: provide clear, independent, and accurate recommendations backed by hard evidence and deep expertise. In a world of uncertainty, we bring our clients clarity and confidence.

The DBI Internship Experience is a well-organized and unique opportunity for high potential students in the AEC field. We supplement actual field and cost estimating experiences with custom training modules curated by The Learning Studio and facilitate companywide engagement with an Expert Speaker series. The Experience ends with a Capstone presentation to a small panel and a Team Leader review for potential future employment opportunities. Our goal is to hire 90% of Junior Estimators into entry-level permanent opportunities after completion of their degrees.

Location
We are seeking Junior Estimators for a 10-week, 2027 Summer internship program across a dozen office locations throughout the US including: Atlanta, Chicago (Inverness), Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Riverside (CA), and San Antonio. Please indicate your preferred location(s) when applying.

The Opportunity
As a Junior Estimator, you will work alongside seasoned Estimators and Project Managers to learn how damage assessment projects are measured, documented, and presented. You will gain in-person experience from visiting project sites to gather data and collaborate with team members in the local office to learn how to prepare cost estimates. This is a paid internship offering between $20.00 - 27.50 per hour depending on education and experience.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with site visits to collect measurements, photos, and project details.

  • Support the analysis of labor, materials, and timelines for project estimates.

  • Help track costs and flag differences between projected and actual figures.

  • Learn to prepare professional reports and data entries in estimating tools.

  • Gain exposure to industry software like Xactimate and Bluebeam Revu.

What You Bring

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in the AEC field such as civil engineering or construction management.

  • Strong career interest in construction consulting, estimating, and project management.

  • Comfortable working full time in both office and field environments.

  • Willingness to travel locally and work within or atop damaged buildings, including roofs.

Physical Activities and Requirements

In addition to the working conditions and associated physical activities and requirements above, the incumbent may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, or feel, especially in the course of investigating and assessing property damage; these requirements may include the need to lift weights of up to 50 pounds, including a ladder, and climb ladders upwards of 30 feet.

The work requires close visual acuity, with or without correction, to prepare reports containing words, symbols, and numerical figures; the incumbent is required to view a computer terminal, use a keyboard, read printed documents, make detailed visual inspections, perceive color, perceive depth, and have a sufficient field of vision to carry out all inspection and related duties.

DBI Construction Consultants is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer. We believe that diversity strengths our teams and drives innovation, client satisfaction and a strong work culture.
