Innovation Engineer Interns focus on developing new ideas, technologies, and solutions, often working in R&D environments. Product Development Interns concentrate on designing, testing, and refining products for market readiness. While both roles involve engineering and collaboration, their core objectives and work settings differ slightly, with Innovation Interns emphasizing innovation and experimentation, and Product Interns focusing on product lifecycle stages.

What types of projects can innovation engineer interns expect to work on, and how do they typically collaborate with other teams?

As an Innovation Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that focus on developing and testing new technologies, processes, or products. These projects often require close collaboration with cross-functional teams such as R&D, product management, and design to bring innovative ideas to life. Interns are usually encouraged to contribute their perspectives during brainstorming sessions and assist in prototyping, data analysis, or user testing. This role provides a dynamic environment where you can learn from experienced engineers and gain exposure to the end-to-end innovation process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an innovation engineer intern?

To thrive as an Innovation Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in engineering principles, creative problem-solving, and a relevant degree in progress such as engineering or computer science. Familiarity with prototyping tools, CAD software, and project management platforms is often expected, along with exposure to design thinking methodologies. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability set standout interns apart in collaborative and fast-changing environments. These skills and qualifications are essential for contributing fresh ideas, rapidly iterating solutions, and effectively working within multidisciplinary teams.

What does an innovation engineer intern do?

An Innovation Engineer Intern assists in developing new technologies, products, or processes to improve efficiency and drive growth within a company. Their responsibilities typically include conducting research, brainstorming creative solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and prototyping ideas. The role provides hands-on experience in innovation management and often involves learning about emerging trends in technology and engineering. This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in applying their technical skills to real-world challenges.

Job description

RAM Aerospace is a leader in aerospace innovation, powering flight and space exploration with precision solenoids, valves, and actuators. Since 1975, we've supported missions like the Space Shuttle and continue to deliver mission-critical components for commercial, defense, and satellite systems. As one of Southern Utah's largest employers, we drive economic growth and offer high-skilled careers in engineering and manufacturing. From our advanced facility in St. George, we build the future of aerospace-on time, with excellence, and as a team. Join us to work on groundbreaking technology and help shape the future of flight and space exploration. Your career takes off here!
As our Manufacturing Engineer Intern, you will step out of the classroom and onto the front lines of aerospace production. You will act as a force multiplier for our senior Manufacturing Engineers, assisting in the design of optimized plant layouts, developing custom tooling, and implementing Lean manufacturing principles to improve product flow. This isn't a "desk-only" role; you will be on the shop floor observing processes, identifying bottlenecks, and helping to train operators on the very systems you help create. If you are a curious, hands-on engineering student who wants to see your ideas physically improve how mission-critical hardware is built, we want you on our team.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lean Manufacturing & Process Mapping: Support Lean activities including plant layouts, process mapping, and Value Stream Mapping (VSM). You will assist in Kaizen events and identify opportunities to eliminate waste and facilitate smoother product flow.
  • Tooling & Fixture Design: Assist in the design and development of specialized manufacturing tooling and jigs using CAD software. You will also research and implement improved methods for tooling storage and inventory control.
  • Documentation & Work Instructions: Support the creation and maintenance of highly detailed process documentation and visual work instructions. You will help ensure that internal process specifications are up-to-date and easily understood by operators.
  • Process Improvement Implementation: Aid in the identification and implementation of process and assembly improvements. You will research the feasibility and performance of new equipment or components to determine their impact on production efficiency.
  • Equipment Installation & Support: Support the installation, operation, and maintenance of machinery to ensure equipment is functioning according to strict aerospace specifications.
  • Operator Training: Assist in the training of shop floor operators on key processes and new equipment, ensuring safety and quality standards are maintained across the facility.

Requirements
Legal: Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check and drug screening. ITAR: Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum (due to ITAR requirements). Education: Currently pursuing a BS degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related engineering discipline. Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Must have a basic understanding of manufacturing processes like machining and assembly. Soft Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and work well with others. You must be comfortable interacting with both senior engineers and shop floor operators. Physical Demands: Must be able to sit and stand constantly, frequently transitioning between an office environment and the active manufacturing floor. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally. Why You'll Love Working at RAM - Our Benefits At RAM Aerospace, we believe our people are our greatest asset. That's why we offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package designed to support your well-being, work-life balance, and long-term success.
