We are looking for a Transformer Winder to join our team at Innomotics.

Your Future Role  Transformer Winder

  • Provides support to the Innomotics Kansas City Facility. Must become a member of the local collective bargaining unit upon hire.
  • Wind, insulate, connect power transformers and other electrical apparatus where procedures are generally not established, where manufacturing information and specifications may not be available and where planning and diagnosing is required for repair.
  • Tools & equipment Coil Winding equipment, shears, band saw, hand and power tools, wire cutters, wedges, drill press, crimping tools, cranes, industrial trucks, hi-pot tester, growler, ductor tester, .test boards, surge testers, megger and misc. electrical and mechanical meters, gauges, indicators, hydraulic presses, safety equipment, etc.
  • Materials: Tapes, press board, wedges, compounds, wire, cable, micarta, hardware, banding, wire, flux, etc.

Transformer Winding and Repair

  • Wind and assemble transformer coils including low-voltage and high-voltage windings 
  • Perform manual coil winding as well as operate computer-controlled winding machines (CNC coil winders) 
  • Rebuild transformer windings using copper conductors, insulation materials, and structural supports 
  • Install insulation systems including pressboard, wedges, barriers, tapes, and spacers 
  • Diagnose winding failures and determine appropriate repair methods 
  • Reverse engineer winding configurations and insulation systems from existing transformers when documentation is unavailable 

Winding Technologies

Experience with transformer winding methods such as:

  • Mushroom wound coils (disc winding used in power transformers) 
  • Helical winding commonly used for low-voltage high-current windings 
  • Layer winding used for smaller distribution transformer coils 
  • Disc winding including interleaved disc arrangements for high-voltage windings 
  • Continuous winding and crossover techniques 
  • Lead routing, tap leads, and insulation barriers between discs and layers 

Experience with both manual winding techniques and CNC-controlled winding equipment is preferred. 

Mechanical Assembly and Shop Support

  • Assemble transformer components including cores, clamping systems, leads, and insulation structures 
  • Assist with transformer and motor assembly and disassembly work on the shop floor 
  • Support general electrical apparatus repair activities as workload requires 
  • Cut, form, and install insulation materials to required tolerances 
  • Use shop machinery such as shears, band saws, drill presses, and presses for fabrication work 

Electrical Testing Support

  • Assist with electrical testing including: 
    1. insulation resistance testing 
    2. contact resistance testing 
    3. voltage verification 
    4. basic electrical troubleshooting 
  • Set up and operate electrical test equipment as directed 

Shop Operations

  • Safely operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment to move heavy components 
  • Maintain proper documentation of work performed and materials used 
  • Follow established safety procedures for electrical and mechanical work 
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area 

Tools and Equipment Used

Typical tools and equipment include:

  • Manual and CNC coil winding equipment 
  • Shears, band saws, and drill presses 
  • Crimping tools and cable preparation tools 
  • Hand and power tools 
  • Hydraulic presses 
  • Overhead cranes and industrial trucks 
  • Electrical test equipment including megger, ductor tester, hi-pot tester, and surge tester 

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience working in related field
  • Completion of a High School Diploma
  • Advanced electrical aptitude and working knowledge of tools
  • Stacking core steel and cutting
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in transformer repair, motor winding, or related electrical apparatus work 
  • Experience with manual winding and/or computer-controlled (CNC) winding equipment 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and electrical troubleshooting ability 
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and technical drawings 
  • Ability to reverse engineer winding and insulation configurations from existing equipment 
  • Ability to safely work with heavy components using cranes and lifting equipment 
  • Ability to use electrical test instruments and shop tools 

 

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience 

Experience with the following:

  • Experience in transformer winding and rebuild work 
  • Experience working in an industrial electrical repair facility 
  • Familiarity with insulation systems used in power transformers 
  • Experience interpreting one-line diagrams and winding data 
  • Understanding of electrical hazards and safe work practices 

The pay range for this position is $38.00. The shift differential for working second shift is

$1.00. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
