Job description

We're looking for an early-career CS or IT professional with database skills to own, run, and modernize the technology behind our compliance and cybersecurity consulting practice. You'll start on day 1 as the point person for our ~20-person team's day-to-day IT needs, but you'll be expected to steadily automate that routine work so more and more of your time shifts toward higher-value projects: rebuilding our data infrastructure so that years of client compliance documentation is organized, searchable, and queryable, and integrating automations and software to amplify our analysts’ efforts.

Your role in the beginning will include ~10 hours a week of hands-on IT support (helpdesk, onboarding, device setup), but we're looking for someone who has the instinct and judgment to automate the repetitive. Then for the more interesting part: our client documentation and internal data have accumulated organically over years, and we want someone to redesign those structures so questions like “how current are this client’s compliance documents?” take one query instead of an hour. You’ll spend time learning our business from the inside so you can identify the right technical approaches to solve our unique business needs. You’ll also serve as the technical partner for teammates  building automations: owning the plumbing (access, deployment, integration with our systems) that turns their prototypes into tools the whole team uses. The ideal candidate will be high-agency, insatiably curious and think like a builder: we encourage experimentation, and seek to shape roles around each person’s strengths and interests.  You don’t need to know anything about our industry; we’ll teach you the fundamentals on the job, and you’ll gain experience in a niche, high-demand field.

About Us:

Utility Services is an established compliance and security consulting firm based in Vermont, specializing in helping electric utilities navigate the complex landscape of the NERC reliability standards and improve their cyber and physical security. The electric sector is experiencing unprecedented transformation, and we're looking for someone who wants to grow with us.

Our employees have a hybrid schedule, working remotely 3 days per week and in-person 2 days per week at our office in beautiful Waterbury, Vermont — close to hiking, mountain biking and skiing, and 30 minutes away from Burlington, Vermont's largest city. Note: because this role supports our physical office and equipment, some weeks will lean more in-person than others.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide friendly, reliable day-to-day IT support for our team — helpdesk, onboarding and offboarding, device setup and imaging, account management

  • Automate and streamline that routine work over time (scripting, self-service tooling, better defaults) so it takes less and less of your week

  • Maintain and document our server environment, backups, and security practices, working with our managed service partners and vendors

  • Redesign our internal data structures so compliance documentation is consistently organized, searchable, and queryable

  • Build reporting and dashboards that give our analysts instant answers about document status, review dates, and client health

  • Partner with teammates building software and automations, owning the systems side (access, deployment, integration with our file structures and tools) so their solutions get wired into daily operations.

  • Work alongside our analysts to understand what information they need, and shape the systems to add efficacy.

  • Evaluate tools and vendors and make pragmatic build-vs-buy recommendations

Who You Are:

  • An early-career professional or recent graduate in Computer Science, Information Systems, IT, or a related field (roughly 0-3 years of experience)

  • Hands-on with databases (SQL, schema design, or data modeling) through work, coursework, or personal projects

  • Comfortable scripting and automating (Python, PowerShell, or similar); experienced with AI tools for both coding and non-coding work

  • A strong problem-solver with high agency (i.e. able to identify what skills a given problem requires and learn them)

  • Service-minded and patient - you like being the person people trust to fix things, and you communicate clearly with non-technical colleagues

  • A consistent documenter and communicator who knows how to make their work legible to technical and non-technical people alike

  • Detail-oriented, security-conscious, and comfortable owning responsibility for systems people depend on

  • Excited about staying in or returning to Vermont

Why This Opportunity:

  • Own an entire environment end-to-end (rare for an early-career role, where most IT jobs hand you one slice of a ticket queue)

  • Shape the modernization of our systems rather than inheriting someone else’s finished design

  • Enjoy a builder-friendly culture- if a process annoys you, you’re encouraged to automate it

  • See your work translate directly into capacity for a growing team

  • Chart your own path as the company and industry grow

  • Build a rare technical career without leaving Vermont

Benefits:

  • 401(k)

  • 401(k) matching

  • Dental insurance

  • Employee assistance program

  • Flexible schedule

  • Health insurance

  • Paid time off

  • Professional development assistance

  • Tuition reimbursement

  • Vision insurance

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Waterbury, VT 05676
