Position Summary
The Franklin County Department of Social Services is looking for a proactive, organized Processing Assistant III to be the administrative backbone of our agency. An employee in this position performs a variety of administrative support duties for an assigned division. Work includes concentration in the areas or records, reports, files and public contact. Major duties include document completion, verification, problem identification and resolution; statistical, financial, and/or other record keeping, public contact including receiving and providing information and problem solving; files maintenance and management; composition, calculation, and determination of an action or compliance; and office equipment operations. Work involves the use of a variety of manual or automated office systems. These systems are used to establish, retrieve, verify, research, update and/or authorize processing actions.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm. In the event of a disaster in the county, employee will work rotating shifts at Emergency shelter.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Public Contact
Answering telephone and greeting visitors; providing general program information; typing documents; preparing and maintaining files and records. Acts as receptionist; greets visitors; answers telephone; provides Information; forwards calls to appropriate party; assists the public with the completion of standardized records or documents; directs visitor to appropriate division. Visitors, other county agencies to deliver or collect materials.
Records and Reports
Enters a variety of data into the computer; prepares reports and logs, screens, verifies and reconcile data; sorts, indexes and maintains files; maintains records on customer requests
Composition
Types a variety of documents including correspondence, list, labels, reports, memorandums, etc.; checks items for clerical accuracy and completeness.
Office Equipment Operation
Operates a variety of standard office equipment.
Mail
Receives, sorts, processes and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices. General knowledge of and ability to use correct spelling, punctuation and specialized vocabulary; ability to proofread. General knowledge of office accounting and record keeping procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment. Ability to learn and apply a variety of guidelines applicable to the work process. Ability to use a variety of office equipment. Ability to work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties. Ability to record and compile information based on general guidelines. NC 00403 Ability to balance and reconcile figures. Ability to screen communications based on predetermined guidelines. Ability to gather and give information and instructions regarding the work process and procedures. Ability to learn to use specialized office equipment. May require the ability to coordinate the work of other support staff, student workers or volunteers. Ability to learn to use specialized office equipment.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Possession of a valid NC driver's license upon hire.
