Job description


The Industrial Millwright is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and rebuilding mechanical equipment used in sawmill operations. This role supports production by ensuring all machinery and mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, experience with industrial machinery, and the ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment focused on safety and productivity.

Major Responsibilities & Duties
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial machinery and mechanical equipment throughout the sawmill facility.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues involving conveyors, hydraulic systems, gearboxes, pumps, bearings, motors, chains, belts, saws, and production equipment.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on sawmill equipment to minimize downtime and improve operational reliability.
  • Dismantle, rebuild, align, and install machinery and mechanical components according to specifications and blueprints.
  • Conduct equipment inspections to identify wear, damage, or potential failures.
  • Perform precision alignment, rigging, welding, fabrication, and mechanical adjustments as needed.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and equipment drawings.
  • Collaborate with electricians, maintenance personnel, production teams, and contractors to resolve equipment issues and improve processes.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are completed safely and in compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection documentation.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency maintenance situations in a timely manner to minimize production interruptions.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a millwright apprenticeship program or equivalent industrial maintenance experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of millwright or industrial mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing, sawmill, lumber, or heavy industrial environment preferred.
Required Skills
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills with industrial manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience working with hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, pumps, bearings, chains, gearboxes, and rotating equipment.
  • Ability to perform welding, fabrication, and equipment alignment.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and industrial safety practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods during scheduled shifts.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling in industrial environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier materials with assistance or equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working around heavy industrial machinery, moving equipment, dust, vibration, and loud noise.
  • Required to wear all necessary PPE, including hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and outdoor or open-air environments as needed.
  • Position requires manual dexterity, mechanical aptitude, and a strong commitment to workplace safety.
