Job Description
The Automation Systems Engineer will be a key member of the Advanced Manufacturing team within the Amcor Flexibles North America (AFNA) division and will report directly to the Director of Flexibles Advanced Manufacturing. Smart Manufacturing will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and supporting advanced manufacturing technologies across plastics manufacturing operations. This position will serve as a technical leader within the Advanced Manufacturing team, driving integration between manufacturing equipment, industrial controls, robotics, vision systems, SCADA systems, IoT platforms, MES systems, and enterprise data systems.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
  • Aligns with and actively supports Amcor values by prioritizing safety in all activities and serving as a role model for safe project execution in accordance with company safety policies.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional project teams to design, develop, and implement end-to-end automated vision inspection system (AVIS) and automated robotic solutions across Amcor manufacturing processes.
  • Lead system architecture development for smart manufacturing initiatives including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, MES, IoT, robotics, and industrial networking.
  • Integrate manufacturing equipment with enterprise systems to enable real-time production monitoring and analytics
  • Support machine connectivity initiatives using industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, OPC UA, MQTT, and Modbus.
  • Support implementation of Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory technologies.
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing data collection and visualization systems.
  • Assist with development of digital twins, predictive maintenance strategies, and advanced analytics initiatives.
  • Identifies and develops high-impact automation use cases that deliver competitive advantage. Leads technical scope definition, integrated solution design, risk identification and mitigation, and supports development of the business case.
  • Support automation/vision system design reviews, risk assessments, FAT/SAT, and onsite commissioning.
  • Provides comprehensive project management support, including schedule management, budget oversight, and stakeholder communication. Prepares detailed project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing key information and trends, proactively identifying risks and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Partners with cross-functional teams to define system requirements, develop specifications, design small to large-scale automation concepts, execute proof-of-concepts to reduce technical risk, select external partners, support RFQ processes, lead implementation, and ensure long-term sustainability/maintainability across plant operations.

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years experience in packaging, food, pharmaceutical, or high-speed manufacturing environments.
  • 5+ years of experience/knowledge working in the following areas: Automation, Robotics, AGVs/AMRs, IoT, Industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, OPC UA), MES integration, Data historians, Machine Learning and AI.
  • RIA Robotic Safety Training, Fanuc Education Certification, Ignition Certification (Core/Gold), Rockwell Certification (Logix Programmer, PowerFlex Drives, Motion Control Kinetix, etc.), Industrial Networking Certifications, is a plus.
  • 30% travel requirement
