INTRODUCTION:

The Patient Registration Specialists work together to facilitate the coordination of patient visits by scheduling clinic appointments, performing the check in process; including updates and new patient registration, gathering and verifying patient insurance information, and assisting patients in determining eligibility for benefits and services of the Oregon Health Plan, Medicare, other third party insurance’s, and Purchase Referred Care. Also serves as the key personnel for reception duties.



DUTIES:

  • Serves as key personnel for greeting all visitors to the clinic.
  • Utilizing appropriate functions of electronic health record including scheduling, registration, and scanning.
  • Answers all incoming calls and addresses callers need: schedules, processes both urgent and non-urgent messages, transfer to multiple departments: PRC, optometry, dental, pharmacy, administration, business office, behavioral health, and medical.
  • Schedules visits for medical services including: pediatric providers, primary care providers, massage therapist, MAT counselors, mental health provider, diabetes program and ancillary services including lab, nursing and radiology.]
  • Performs check in process at time of appointment for scheduled patients.
  • Verify street address, phone number and insurance coverage at each visit.
  • Determine eligibility of patients seeking clinic services by requesting proof of Indian ancestry and/or tribal membership, according to IHS guidelines.
  • Manages patient no-shows.
  • Registers new patients, updates information of existing patients and scans in documentation.
  • Provides initial insurance screening for patients: OHP, Medicare, private insurance. Directs patients to the Patient Benefits Specialist when uninsured.
  • Explains benefits and services covered by insurance’s and Purchased/Referred Care.
  • May also perform other duties as needed and assigned.


Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED and 12-months experience in health care setting – OR - an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


Knowledge of:

  • Record keeping and scheduling appointments.
  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • Multi-line telephone system preferred.


Ability to:

  • Relate well to clinic patients, tribal staff, insurance companies as well as federal, state and local health agencies and the general public.
  • Handle possible stressful situations involving explanation of insurance eligibility and benefits to patients.
  • Accurately type 40 words per minute and input data into a computer system.
  • Be well organized and able to handle a large volume of work.
