How much do independent lawyer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for independent lawyer in the United States is $100,626.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,000.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an independent lawyer?

An independent lawyer is a legal professional who operates on their own, without being affiliated with a larger law firm or organization. They typically manage their own clients, set their own hours, and handle all aspects of their legal practice, from client consultations to case management. Independent lawyers may specialize in various areas of law, such as family, criminal, or business law, and often provide more personalized service. Many choose this path for greater autonomy and flexibility in their work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent lawyer?

To thrive as an Independent Lawyer, you need a law degree, bar admission, strong research skills, and in-depth legal knowledge relevant to your practice area. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and document drafting tools is crucial. Excellent client communication, negotiation, and time management set standout practitioners apart. These skills ensure you can provide effective legal counsel, efficiently manage cases, and build a strong client base as a solo practitioner.

What are some common challenges faced by independent lawyers when managing their own practice?

Independent lawyers often encounter challenges such as balancing client acquisition with legal work, handling administrative tasks like billing and scheduling, and staying updated with legal regulations without the support of a larger firm. Managing multiple responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and self-discipline. Building a reliable professional network and maintaining consistent communication with clients are also vital for success in a solo practice.

Job description

The Role
We are seeking a Staff Attorney to support Aventine's property tax grievance and certiorari practice, working under the direction of our General Counsel. In this role, you will help advance the firm's assessment-review and tax certiorari matters — residential and commercial — as part of Aventine's in-house legal team. This is a hands-on position for an attorney who wants substantive work, ownership of matters, and a central role on a growing team.

This position works on behalf of Aventine Properties LLC and its matters, under the supervision and direction of the General Counsel. It is an in-house role supporting the firm's own practice; it does not involve establishing independent attorney-client relationships with members of the public.

What You'll Do

  • Support the firm's residential and commercial property tax grievance and assessment-review matters from filing through resolution
  • Prepare, review, and manage petitions and filings for the Board of Assessment Review (BAR), Small Claims Assessment Review (SCAR), and Article 7 tax certiorari and Article 78 proceedings, under the General Counsel's supervision
  • Represent the firm's matters in administrative hearings, court appearances, status and settlement conferences, and negotiations with municipal assessors and counsel
  • Draft pleadings, motions, stipulations, settlement documentation, and related correspondence
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on real property tax law (RPTL), valuation, and assessment issues
  • Support collections and enforcement matters arising from the firm's practice
  • Assist with the firm's contracts, corporate, regulatory, and compliance matters as needed
  • Help develop, refine, and standardize the firm's legal processes, templates, and documentation — including supporting the automation of routine workflows
  • Manage multiple matters and deadlines with strong organization and follow-through

What We're Looking For

  • J.D. and admission to the New York State Bar in good standing (required)
  • 2+ years of legal experience; litigation, real estate, or tax certiorari exposure a plus
  • Familiarity with New York real property tax law, the assessment-review process, or valuation concepts a strong plus (but not required — we will train the right candidate)
  • Strong drafting, research, and analytical skills
  • Comfort with court appearances, hearings, and negotiation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Sound judgment and the ability to manage matters independently while collaborating closely with the General Counsel
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to manage a high volume of matters and deadlines
  • A self-starter who thrives in a small, fast-moving team
  • Interest in helping build and improve legal processes, including through technology and automation

Company Description

Aventine Properties LLC is a rapidly growing tax grievance firm serving residential and commercial property owners across Long Island and New York State. We process thousands of assessment appeals annually and are actively building modern infrastructure to support our continued growth. This is a detail-driven, fast-moving practice where accuracy and accountability matter.
