We are passionate team players, who see the "bigger picture" and work together to impact our communities and enhance the lives of those living in them. Collectively, we work to help design a better tomorrow.

Over the past 24 years, AES has attracted many innovative minds, to work on complex, challenging, and exciting projects. Attracting the right talent has helped us with the quality of our projects, and we have been able to build our reputation for providing award-winning designs.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Calgary office. This role offers exposure to the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and planning to detailed design, construction, and commissioning. As a senior member of the team, you will lead electrical design efforts on commercial and institutional building projects while supervising and mentoring junior engineers and designers.

While this position is Calgary-based, there will be opportunities to support projects and collaborate with teams across other AES offices, including Vancouver, Kelowna, and Victoria, as project needs arise. As AES continues to grow in Alberta, there may also be future opportunities to support work in Edmonton and the surrounding region.

The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership: Supervise and mentor junior engineers and designers, guiding them in the preparation of electrical drawings, specifications, and reports.
  • Design Compliance: Ensure electrical designs conform to all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Design Development: Lead the implementation of design concepts, including the preparation and development of production drawings, ensuring quality assurance and quality checks are met.
  • Electrical Distribution Design: Provide strong expertise in both medium and low-voltage electrical distribution systems and the design of lighting, fire alarms, and mechanical equipment connections.
  • Utilities & Service Requirements: Understand and apply utility requirements, standards for service upgrades, new service requests, and variance requests.
  • Reporting: Prepare and develop various reports, including building assessments, schematic reports, and design development documents.
  • Project Support: Provide technical and administrative support throughout all project phases, from concept to occupancy.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with prime consultants, sub-consultants, facility management teams, and developers, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Construction Administration: Oversee construction administration duties, including reviewing shop drawings, contractor quotations, change orders (SI, CCN), and progress claims.
  • Site Coordination: Attend site meetings, perform site reviews, and generate detailed reports.
  • Project Management: Manage tight schedules, and limited resources, and motivate staff to ensure optimal performance and project delivery.
  • Financial: Manage project budgets and scope of work to ensure financial success of a project by staying within budget and requesting additional fees where warranted.
  • Work with senior leaders to pursue new work and issue proposals.
  • Teamwork & Problem-Solving: Foster a collaborative team environment, leveraging strong technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Organization & Prioritization: Effectively manage project tasks, set priorities, and ensure all deliverables are met on time.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering design within the building construction industry, with at least five years in a project management or senior engineering role.
  • Education: Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent experience.
  • Technical Skills: Strong background in medium and low voltage electrical systems design, as well as lighting, fire alarm, and mechanical system connections.
  • Software Skills: Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit. Familiarity with short-circuit and fault study software is a plus.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to clients, contractors, and team members.
  • Team Leadership: Proven experience managing teams, mentoring junior staff, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Professional Registration: Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • Industry Expertise: Minimum 10 years of experience in engineering building consulting, with expertise in various sectors such as residential, commercial, mixed-use, healthcare, institutional, and light industrial projects.
  • Project Experience: Familiarity with new development and tenant improvement projects.
  • Code Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, fire alarm standards, ASHRAE, and local municipal bylaws.
  • Additional Experience: Experience in transportation projects is an asset.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Collaboration: Ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal teams, external consultants, and clients to ensure successful project outcomes.

Compensation: $100,000 to $120,000 (depending on experience).

Why Join AES Engineering?
