What is an independent contractor remote customer service?

An Independent Contractor Remote Customer Service job involves providing customer support services from a remote location on a contract basis. Instead of being a traditional employee, you work as a self-employed professional responsible for handling customer inquiries, resolving issues, and assisting with orders. You typically choose your own schedule and may work with one or multiple clients. Since you're not an employee, taxes, benefits, and expenses are your responsibility. This role requires strong communication skills, a reliable internet connection, and the ability to work independently.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an independent contractor remote customer service?

As an Independent Contractor Remote Customer Service representative, your day-to-day tasks usually include answering customer inquiries via phone, email, or chat, resolving issues, documenting interactions, and following up on escalated requests. You may also be responsible for updating customer accounts and maintaining accurate records of communication. Because you work independently, managing your own schedule and workspace is key, and you often need to adapt quickly to changing systems or client protocols. Despite working remotely, collaboration with team leads or company contacts frequently occurs through virtual meetings or messaging platforms to ensure consistent service quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the independent contractor remote customer service position?

Independent Contractor Remote Customer Service professionals require strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience in customer service, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CRM software, virtual call center platforms, and reliable internet access is typically necessary. Outstanding candidates are proactive, self-motivated, and able to manage time efficiently while working independently. These skills ensure high-quality customer interactions, effective issue resolution, and success in a remote work environment.

  • Make outbound sales calls to engage customers, expand relationships, and uncover new business opportunities.
  • Educate customers on Quill products, programs, consolidation opportunities, and value-added services.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners to maximize account potential and deliver an easy, seamless customer experience.
  • Conduct meaningful sales conversations with high-value customers to increase sales across categories.
  • Review account performance, revenue analytics, and profitability to support financially sound sales decisions.
  • Identify under-penetrated product categories and develop strategies to grow year-over-year revenue and gross profit.
  • Consistently meet or exceed productivity metrics, activity goals, and key performance indicators.

What you bring to the table:

  • Motivation to build customer relationships that create measurable value and growth.
  • Clear, confident communication with customers and internal partners across calls, follow-up, and solution-focused conversations.
  • Curiosity and strong listening skills to understand customer needs, ask thoughtful questions, and uncover opportunities.
  • A problem-solving mindset with the ability to connect customer needs to relevant products, programs, or solutions.
  • Comfort making outbound calls, engaging customers, and continuing forward after rejection or setbacks.
  • Strong organization, time management, and follow-through when balancing customer conversations, priorities, and activity goals.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn quickly as customer needs, business priorities, or sales approaches change.
  • A customer-first approach focused on creating a positive, helpful, and professional experience in every interaction.
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to share ideas, apply feedback, and learn from managers, peers, and business partners.
  • Composure and critical thinking when prioritizing next steps, solving customer challenges, and supporting sales goals.

What’s needed- Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience.
