What is an independent contractor printing sales representative?

Independent Contractor Printing Sales Representatives are self-employed sales professionals who sell printing services and products on behalf of printing companies. Instead of being direct employees, they operate as independent contractors, often working on commission. Their main responsibilities include finding new clients, maintaining relationships, providing quotes, and coordinating orders between clients and printers. This role offers flexibility and the opportunity to work with multiple clients, but it also requires strong self-motivation and networking skills.

How does an independent contractor printing sales representative typically structure their daily activities to maximize sales and client relationships?

As an Independent Contractor Printing Sales Representative, your day often involves a balance of prospecting new clients, maintaining relationships with existing customers, and coordinating with printing vendors or production teams. You'll spend time researching potential leads, scheduling and conducting sales meetings (virtually or in person), and following up on quotes or orders. Effective time management and self-motivation are crucial, since you set your own schedule and must prioritize activities that drive sales. Additionally, strong communication with both clients and your print partners ensures smooth project delivery and repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor printing sales representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Printing Sales Representative, you need strong sales acumen, industry knowledge of printing services, and a proven track record in business development or account management. Familiarity with CRM software, quoting tools, and digital print platforms is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and effective negotiation abilities help set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for building client relationships, meeting sales targets, and successfully managing the sales cycle independently.

Job description

Turn your love of community into a career.
Best Version Media is looking for a driven, community-minded sales professional to join us as a Media Sales Representative.
About Best Version Media
Founded in 2007, Best Version Media (BVM) has spent nearly two decades bringing North American communities together one person, one home, one business at a time. Today, BVM publishes over 1,300 local magazines and reaches billions of digital impressions across North America, helping thousands of local business owners grow.
What You'll Do
This is a field-based, in-person sales role. You'll build your own book of business in your local territory, on a schedule you control, selling advertising placements across BVM's local print magazine and companion digital, social, and website products.
  • Consult: Meet face-to-face with standout local business owners to showcase what makes their community great.
  • Strategize: Build powerful, multi-channel branding programs using our media suite, print, digital, social, websites, and reputation management.
  • Scale: Leverage our proven training and time-tested sales system to grow your own book of business, building community engagement that pays you and your community for years to come.

What You'll Earn
This is a 1099 independent contractor role with no base salary or draw (full commission). Representatives earn a recurring commission on sales, with commission rates generally ranging from 70-80% based on monthly sales volume and performance relative to the baseline* cost structure. Bonuses are available during start-up and on an ongoing basis.
*Baseline is the back-end cost associated with the magazine & digital product's cost to produce, distribute, bill clients, etc, and does not come out of the representative's pocket.
What You Bring
  • Sales Acumen: A drive to help local businesses grow through the art of advertising sales, strong communication, negotiation, and closing skills. Experience with digital or print advertising is a plus, but the right attitude matters most; we provide the training.
  • Growth Mindset: A resilient, never-give-up attitude paired with a proactive approach to learning and continuous self-improvement.
  • Community Focus: A genuine interest in building and nurturing relationships with local business owners, putting their success first.

Why Best Version Media?
  • Support: Comprehensive training and ongoing professional support, we're a community in ourselves.
  • Proven Success: Nearly 20 years serving local communities, with over 1,300 publications and a reach of billions of digital impressions across North America.
  • Culture & Rewards: Our why is simple: bring communities closer, one relationship at a time, and we celebrate the people who make that happen.
    • Earn incentive trips, awards, and friendly contests along the way, all within a flexible schedule built to keep you present for what matters most: friends and family.
