What is an independent contractor PKI engineer?

Independent Contractor PKI Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) systems on a contract basis rather than as full-time employees. They are responsible for tasks such as certificate management, encryption protocols, and ensuring secure digital communications within organizations. As independent contractors, they typically work with multiple clients, providing their expertise for specific projects or periods. Their work is crucial for maintaining data security and compliance with industry standards. They often need a strong background in cybersecurity, cryptography, and IT systems.

What are some common challenges independent contractor PKI engineers face when working with multiple clients?

Independent Contractor PKI Engineers often manage diverse environments, each with unique security requirements and legacy systems. Adapting PKI solutions to fit varying infrastructure, ensuring compliance with different industry standards, and coordinating with client IT teams can be challenging. Time management and clear communication are essential to balance concurrent projects, troubleshoot issues remotely, and deliver tailored solutions efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor PKI engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor PKI Engineer, you need a strong background in cryptography, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) concepts, and related security protocols, often supported by a computer science degree or relevant certifications such as CISSP or CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Certificate Services, OpenSSL, and HSMs, as well as experience with PKI lifecycle management platforms, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure seamless integration and secure implementation of PKI solutions. These skills are crucial for safeguarding sensitive data, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering reliable security services to clients.

Who We Are
NexGen is a fast-growing land surveying firm expanding its footprint across Florida. We deliver boundary, topographic, construction, and geospatial services to title agents, real estate attorneys, and residential developers - and we do it with precision and professionalism. As our project volume grows, we're building a trusted network of independent Party Chiefs who want consistent work, professional collaboration, and the freedom that comes with contracting.
The Opportunity
This is a 1099 independent contractor role for experienced Party Chiefs who prefer the flexibility of contract work without sacrificing steady, meaningful projects. You'll work on a project-by-project basis alongside NexGen's licensed surveyors and project managers - operating with the autonomy of an independent professional and the support of an established firm behind you. We primarily utilize highly skilled one-man crews, but also accept two-man crews for the right projects.

  • Operate GPS, Total Stations, and data collectors with accuracy and care
  • Interpret project plans, survey plats, and specifications to guide field activities
  • Collect and document clear, precise field notes and sketches for each project
  • Communicate proactively with NexGen project managers on progress and site conditions
  • Uphold safety standards and quality expectations on every job

What You Bring
  • 3+ years of field surveying experience, including independent or crew leadership roles
  • Strong proficiency with GPS, Total Stations, and data collection software
  • Solid understanding of survey principles, legal descriptions, and construction staking
  • A valid Florida driver's license with a clean record (fewer than 3 moving violations in 3 years; no DUI or reckless driving in 5 years)
  • Your own reliable transportation to and from job sites
  • High school diploma or GED; technical surveying training a plus
  • The ability to work independently outdoors in Florida's conditions - self-motivated and dependable
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, accountable approach to every engagement
