Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

Under general direction, the Network Engineer II provides advanced-level assistance with the installation and operational support of the organization's networks, including LANs, WANs, and other Internet, data communications systems. They work on complex problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors. The incumbent is responsible for the evaluation of current systems and assists with determination of future needs. They plan and lead implementation of large scale systems/projects. The incumbent provides work leadership and training to lower-level network engineers. They create and drive improvements to voice and data system-related processes and standards.

This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.

Responsibilities
  • Fulfill day-to-day operational tasks.
  • Provide end-user support fulfilling IT Service Catalog definitions.
  • Configure, install and troubleshoot network systems.
  • Activate data jacks and perform equipment moves, adds, and changes as necessary.
  • Physically maintain and install equipment in telecommunications rooms and data-centers.
  • Connect equipment to and maintain power systems.
  • Create and maintain documentation and diagrams.
  • Provide Tier 2 support of internal data communication systems.
  • Comply with departmental processes, such as incident management, change management and problem management.
  • Monitor and report on voice and network systems usage, availability, and performance.
  • Participate in networking system evaluations.
  • Collaborate with other members of IT staff and end users.
  • Follow network engineering best practices and adhere to existing policies and procedures.
  • Manage and document copper and fiber connectivity across the campus and within buildings.
  • Design rack and cabinet equipment layout for server rooms and other telecommunications rooms.
  • Report, manage and troubleshoot issues with appropriate vendor tech-support staff.
  • Perform basic-to-intermediate level configuration, troubleshooting and problem mitigation on all data network equipment, including wireless and network security equipment.
  • Work effectively with vendors, contractors and other staff to coordinate system installations and provide quality assurance oversight.
  • Provide guidance to lower-level staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform 24/7 on-call support on a rotating basis and after-hours/weekend work for planned maintenance as required.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of network/telephony engineering experience
  • Intermediate knowledge of LAN/WAN, data communications systems, Internet and telecommunication protocols, remote access systems, server and LAN hardware systems, routers, switches, firewalls, UPS/PDU equipment and wireless network equipment.
  • Extensive understanding of data-center installation, cabling and labeling standards, voice and data network maintenance and troubleshooting skills, and familiarity with proper use of basic hand tools.
  • Extensive familiarity with software productivity packages such as Excel, Word, and Visio.
  • Superior analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and/or individually, with proven track record of success.
  • Strong communication skills, be detail oriented, self-motivated, and work with limited supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two to four years of network/telephony engineering experience.
  • Cisco CCNA certification (or other equivalent network certification) preferred.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $93,163 to $139,714, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
