What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor House Sitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor House Sitter, you need reliability, attention to detail, and basic home maintenance knowledge, often supported by references or background checks. Familiarity with home security systems, alarm codes, and smart home devices is typically required. Trustworthiness, strong communication, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills for building client confidence and handling unexpected situations. These skills ensure the safety, upkeep, and security of clients' homes, leading to repeat business and positive referrals.

What is the difference between Independent Contractor House Sitter vs Pet Sitter?

AspectIndependent Contractor House SitterPet Sitter
CredentialsNone required, but background checks may be preferredNone required, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentPrivate homes, often for extended periodsHomes, pet owners' residences, sometimes on short notice
Employer & Industry UsageSelf-employed, contracted directly with homeownersSelf-employed or through agencies, contracted with pet owners

While both roles involve caring for homes or pets, an Independent Contractor House Sitter primarily focuses on maintaining the homeowner's property during their absence, whereas a Pet Sitter specializes in caring for animals. The house sitter's work is more about property security and upkeep, while pet sitters provide companionship and care for pets. Both roles often require trustworthiness and basic background checks, but house sitters typically work in a broader range of environments.

What are Independent Contractor House Sitters?

Independent Contractor House Sitters are individuals hired on a contract basis to take care of a client's home while they are away. Their responsibilities typically include tasks like collecting mail, watering plants, caring for pets, and ensuring the home's security. Unlike employees, independent contractors manage their own schedules, set their own rates, and are responsible for their own taxes and insurance. House sitters work independently and may find jobs through agencies or online platforms. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the homeowner and the sitter.

What are some common challenges Independent Contractor House Sitters face, and how can they effectively address them?

Independent Contractor House Sitters often encounter challenges such as managing unpredictable schedules, adapting to different home environments, and handling emergencies like maintenance issues or pet health concerns. To address these, it's important to have strong communication with homeowners, maintain a checklist for each assignment, and stay organized with schedules and instructions. Building a network of trusted local contacts, such as repair professionals or veterinarians, can also help house sitters respond quickly to unexpected situations and demonstrate reliability to clients.

Company Description

Heaven Sent Pet Care is looking for dynamic, caring, and trustworthy pet lovers to join our expanding team. We are a professional pet care company that has been serving the Evanston, Wilmette, and Kenilworth areas since 1999. We are committed to offering professional and personalized pet care services to our clients in their homes. We offer flexible ongoing positions that work well as supplemental income.

If you are a self-starter, able to work independently, and can manage a changing schedule, this may be the job for you!

Job Description

We are currently hiring for Overnight House-Sitter/Pet-Sitters. **We are especially interested in House-sitters available during our busiest time of year -- winter holiday break -- sometime between 12/23-1/2.

This position requires OVERNIGHT STAYS (sleeping over in a client's home) with the client's animals. Each overnight stay begins from the dinner period (arrival between 5-7pm) and continues until the morning period (departure between 7-9am). Please note: House-sitters are NOT able to bring guests with them into the client's home during their stay.

House-sitting includes:

  • walking the dog(s)
  • feedings
  • medications if necessary
  • maintaining each animal's routine.
  • House-sitting may also include other pet-sitting or vacation care tasks such as bringing in the mail/newspaper, plant care, cleaning up messes (ie: hairballs, accidents), and keeping the home in order while the clients are away.

Fees

The base rate paid to a house-sitter for each night of house-sitting is $32.50 for one dog and goes up from there depending on client surcharges. There are extra fees given to the house-sitter for additional animals in the home, extra visits scheduled during the daytime, and for holidays. (Potential gratuity from clients is not reflected in this rate.)

Scheduling

House-sitting jobs last anywhere from 1 night to 2 weeks. House-sitters typically will take one booking per month. They may take on more bookings depending on their availability and client requests.

House-sitters are independent contractors with Heaven Sent and are offered client "bookings" as clients schedule vacation care with us. House-sitters work on an "as-needed" basis and accept or reject each booking on an individual basis.

HolidaysOur preference is that house-sitters are available for at least 2 out of 3 of our busiest holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Years, Spring Break). There is an extra surcharge paid to sitters for holiday work.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Background & References: You need to be at least 21 years old, able to pass a background/criminal check, and have at least 3 references.
  • Supplies & Equipment: You need to have: (1) a reliable car, (2) a computer/laptop/tablet with access to the internet, (3) a printer or access to one (4) a smartphone
  • Location: We are most interested in candidates who live in or around our service areas in Evanston, Wilmette, or Kenilworth.
  • And of course, we expect that you love animals! Working with animals can be an extremely rewarding and fun job and we are looking for candidates whose priority is providing quality care to our furry clients and their owners. You don't have to have any professional animal work experience, but we find it helpful if you've had pets of your own before.

Is this a good fit for you? We are looking for candidates who:

  • Are organized and detail-oriented.
  • Are dependable, trustworthy, timely, and professional.
  • Have great customer service and communication skills.
  • Are team players who can handle last-minute changes and requests from clients.
  • Are self-starters able to work independently and responsibly.
  • Enjoy dog-walking outside in all four seasons and the weather that comes with them! (Rain, snow, heat, cold, wind...)
  • Can make at least a 6-month commitment to working with us. We view this position as long-term supplemental income, not temporary or seasonal.

We look forward to hearing from you!
