What is an independent contractor front end developer?

An Independent Contractor Front End Developer is a self-employed professional who specializes in building and maintaining the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. Unlike full-time employees, they work on a contract basis for various clients, often managing multiple projects at once. Their main responsibilities include designing responsive layouts, implementing user interfaces with technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and ensuring compatibility across browsers and devices. Independent contractors typically have the flexibility to set their own schedules and rates, but are also responsible for managing their own taxes and business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor front end developer?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Front End Developer, you need expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Vue, often backed by a strong portfolio and relevant project experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), build tools, and sometimes certifications in web development are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and client communication skills help you stand out and deliver projects efficiently. These skills are crucial for creating high-quality, user-friendly web interfaces while meeting client deadlines and adapting to varied project requirements.

How does being an independent contractor front end developer impact collaboration on projects compared to working as a full-time employee?

As an independent contractor front end developer, you often collaborate remotely with clients and cross-functional teams, using tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub to communicate and track progress. While you may have less face-to-face or spontaneous interaction than in-house employees, clear communication and scheduled meetings are emphasized to ensure alignment. Building trust and delivering consistent results are key, and you'll generally have more autonomy in managing your workflow and hours. However, you may need to proactively clarify expectations, project requirements, and feedback loops to maintain efficient collaboration.

Larson Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced, licensed Professional Engineer to serve as a Project Engineer, leading and executing front-end engineering and detailed design projects for processing facilities including pulp & paper, chemical processing, power production, and heavy industrial manufacturing. This role offers the opportunity to manage challenging technical assignments while building trusted client relationships and contributing to business growth.
We are looking for a highly motivated, technically proficient engineer who thrives in a consulting environment, enjoys managing complex design challenges, and is eager to take increasing ownership of client and project success.
Description
The Project Engineer will independently lead technical design efforts across multiple projects, serving as both a hands-on technical resource and a primary client contact. This position requires strong process-mechanical design capabilities, multidisciplinary coordination, cost estimating, and direct client interaction. You will develop projects from conceptual planning through detailed design and construction support, guiding junior staff, coordinating with vendors and contractors, and delivering high-quality engineering solutions that meet client needs.
This position is ideal for engineers ready to take a leadership role in project execution while actively building lasting client relationships and contributing to the continued growth of the firm.
Specific Responsibilities include
  • Lead and execute process-mechanical engineering tasks for industrial projects, including pulp & paper, chemical, power, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Manage project scopes, schedules, and budgets while coordinating work across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop conceptual designs, equipment layouts, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and detailed construction documents.
  • Perform engineering calculations including flow modeling, pressure drop, pump sizing, equipment selection, material handling systems, and hydraulic analysis.
  • Develop capital cost estimates, project schedules, and material specifications.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers, designers, drafters, and technicians as part of the project team.
  • Serve as primary client contact for assigned projects, maintaining strong, trusted client relationships and identifying future business opportunities.
  • Perform site visits, field verifications, and construction support throughout project execution.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and equipment suppliers to ensure design integration and constructability.
  • Prepare technical reports, project summaries, and recommendations for clients and internal review.
  • Participate in proposal preparation, client meetings, and business development activities.
  • Travel to client sites as needed (typically less than 25%).

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Paper Science Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive design engineering experience on multidisciplinary industrial projects.
  • High proficiency in process piping design, fluid systems, pump systems, P&IDs, and/or bulk material handling systems.
  • Strong technical expertise in developing both front-end and detailed engineering deliverables.
  • Proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and leading complex design efforts.
  • Strong project management skills with experience in schedule and budget management.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and 3D modeling software required.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a growth-oriented, client-first approach.
