Independent contractors on an F1 visa are generally not permitted to work off-campus unless they qualify for specific employment options like Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which are related to their field of study. Unauthorized employment can jeopardize visa status and future immigration benefits; therefore, F1 students should consult their school's international office or an immigration attorney before engaging in independent contracting work.
