What is an independent contractor exercise science?

Independent Contractor Exercise Science professionals are experts in the field of exercise science who work on a self-employed basis rather than as traditional employees. They may provide services such as fitness assessments, personal training, wellness coaching, or exercise program development for individuals, organizations, or sports teams. As independent contractors, they handle their own business operations, set their schedules, and often work with multiple clients. This role requires a strong background in exercise science, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage client relationships and administrative tasks.

How does an independent contractor exercise science typically collaborate with clients and other professionals?

As an Independent Contractor in Exercise Science, you will often work directly with clients to assess their fitness levels, develop personalized exercise programs, and track progress. Collaboration is key; you may partner with healthcare providers, physical therapists, or nutritionists to ensure comprehensive care for your clients. Communication and networking skills are important, as you’ll coordinate schedules, share client updates, and sometimes work within multidisciplinary teams to achieve the best outcomes. This role offers flexibility, but requires proactive relationship-building and ongoing client management.

What else can I do with an independent contractor exercise science degree?

An exercise science degree for an independent contractor can lead to roles such as personal trainer, fitness coach, or wellness consultant. It also provides a foundation for careers in sports performance, rehabilitation, health coaching, or pursuing certifications like NASM or ACSM to expand opportunities in fitness and health industries.

The key difference lies in scope and services offered, with exercise scientists emphasizing health and performance testing, and personal trainers focusing on fitness goals.

What jobs can you do as an independent contractor exercise scientist?

An independent contractor exercise scientist can work in roles such as personal trainer, fitness consultant, sports performance coach, or wellness specialist. These positions often involve designing training programs, conducting assessments, and providing guidance in gyms, sports teams, or corporate wellness settings, typically requiring relevant certifications and knowledge of exercise science. The work schedule is flexible, and strong communication skills are essential.

Job description

Personal Trainer

Anytime Fitness Elgin is hiring two bilingual Personal Trainers to join our growing coaching team.

At Anytime Fitness Elgin, our mission is to help people get to a healthier place. For us, that means more than putting someone through a workout. It means building relationships, understanding each member's goals and challenges, and helping people overcome one of the biggest hurdles in fitness — getting started and staying consistent.

We're looking for motivated individuals who genuinely enjoy helping people become healthier, stronger, and more confident.

Fluency in both English and Spanish is required for this position. A significant portion of the members this trainer will serve are Spanish-speaking, so the ability to comfortably communicate, motivate, and build relationships in both languages is essential.

Already certified? Great. Not certified yet? We are also willing to consider candidates who have a strong background in fitness, exercise, athletics, or coaching and are ready to turn that experience into a career in Personal Training. Candidates hired without an approved Personal Training certification will be required to obtain one within 120 days of employment.

What We Offer
  • $18–$20 per hour based on experience and qualifications
  • Additional compensation for one-on-one Personal Training sessions
  • Additional compensation for Small Group Training sessions
  • Commission opportunities based on training revenue
  • Paid approved administrative and support time
  • Complimentary Anytime Fitness membership
  • Continuing education and professional development opportunities
  • Ongoing coaching, mentorship, and support
  • Sales and leadership development
  • Opportunity for increased hours and career advancement
  • Positive, supportive, team-oriented work environment

Your earning potential can grow beyond your hourly base as you develop your client base, deliver training sessions, and contribute to the growth of our coaching department.

What You'll Be Doing

Every day may look a little different, but your primary responsibility remains the same: help our members succeed.

You will:

  • Coach one-on-one Personal Training sessions
  • Lead engaging Small Group Training sessions
  • Conduct fitness consultations with new and existing members
  • Learn about each member's goals, challenges, experience, and abilities
  • Design safe and effective individualized exercise programs
  • Motivate members and provide ongoing accountability
  • Track client progress and adjust programming when appropriate
  • Build genuine, long-term relationships with members
  • Follow up with prospects and existing clients
  • Help members understand available Personal Training and coaching options
  • Maintain accurate client notes, appointments, and follow-up activity
  • Maintain a clean, professional, and welcoming training environment
  • Participate in club initiatives and community outreach when appropriate
  • Support normal club operations as needed
Who We're Looking For

The right person for this position doesn't simply enjoy working out — you enjoy working with people and helping them succeed.

You should be someone who:

  • Brings positive energy into the club
  • Can motivate people with different fitness levels and backgrounds
  • Is comfortable starting conversations and building relationships
  • Is dependable, professional, and accountable
  • Takes initiative and ownership
  • Is coachable and willing to learn
  • Works well independently and as part of a team
  • Is comfortable discussing Personal Training and coaching options with members
  • Wants to continue developing professionally
  • Is motivated by goals, personal growth, and the opportunity to increase earnings through performance
Required Qualifications
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Current Personal Training certification OR demonstrated background in fitness, exercise, athletics, coaching, or a related field
  • Uncertified candidates must be willing and able to obtain an approved Personal Training certification within 120 days of employment
  • Current CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain CPR/AED certification before independently training clients
  • Working knowledge of basic exercise technique, strength training, and safe gym practices
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with both English- and Spanish-speaking members
  • Comfortable working with members of different ages, abilities, and fitness levels
  • Dependable, professional, coachable, and motivated to develop as a fitness professional
  • Ability to reliably commute to our Elgin, Illinois location

Relevant fitness backgrounds may include experience or education in areas such as athletics, sports coaching, strength and conditioning, group fitness, exercise science, kinesiology, physical education, gym or fitness facility experience, or other demonstrated hands-on fitness experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification such as NASM, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or equivalent
  • Previous Personal Training experience
  • Small Group Training or group fitness coaching experience
  • Sales or customer service experience
  • Previous fitness industry experience
  • Experience conducting fitness consultations or client assessments
  • Experience with corrective exercise, post-rehabilitation training, or injury prevention
  • Familiarity with fitness club management or client-tracking software
Schedule
  • Part-time
  • Approximately 20–25 hours per week to start
  • Day and evening availability
  • Some weekend availability may be needed
  • In-person position in Elgin, Illinois

As your client base and our coaching department grow, there may be opportunities for additional hours and increased responsibility.
