Fitness Instructor
Employment Type: PRN
Hours: Approximately 10-20 hours per week
Schedule
This is a PRN position averaging 10-20 hours per week. The position requires availability to teach scheduled E-Fit and R.I.P.P.E.D group exercise classes Monday through Friday during morning hours.
Candidates must have reliable availability to teach assigned morning classes. Additional hours may be available through personal training, fitness assessments, member orientations, wellness programs, fitness floor coverage, and other Wellness Center needs.

Position Summary
The Fitness Instructor provides fitness instruction, personal training, member assessments, orientations, and group exercise programming to promote healthy lifestyles and help members achieve their individual wellness goals.
This position works directly with Wellness Center members, patients, Hopedale Medical Complex employees, and other participants to provide safe, effective, and age-appropriate exercise and wellness programming. The Fitness Instructor also supervises the fitness floor, assists with equipment maintenance, supports wellness initiatives, and promotes a welcoming and positive environment for all members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fitness & Personal Training
  • Conduct new member fitness assessments and orientations in accordance with established Wellness Center protocols.
  • Develop and provide individualized fitness and exercise programs based on member goals, fitness levels, abilities, and applicable medical or physician recommendations.
  • Conduct personal training sessions using safe, effective, and appropriate exercise techniques.
  • Monitor participant progress and make appropriate modifications to exercise programs.
  • Educate members regarding proper exercise techniques, equipment use, fitness principles, and injury prevention.
  • Recognize limitations or concerns that may require referral to an appropriate healthcare professional.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, orientations, personal training sessions, and other required activities.
Group Exercise & Wellness Programs
  • Plan and lead group exercise classes appropriate to the participants' age, ability, and fitness level.
  • Provide clear demonstrations and instructions while maintaining participant safety.
  • Modify exercises as appropriate to accommodate varying fitness levels and abilities.
  • Assist with health promotion, wellness, and fitness programs for Wellness Center members and Hopedale Medical Complex employees.
  • Participate in community wellness and health promotion activities as assigned.
Fitness Floor Supervision
  • Supervise the fitness floor to promote a safe, clean, welcoming, and professional environment.
  • Assist members with proper use of cardiovascular, strength-training, and other fitness equipment.
  • Monitor equipment and member activities and address safety concerns appropriately.
  • Respond appropriately to medical or fitness-related emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
  • Provide excellent customer service and respond professionally to member questions and concerns.
Equipment & Facility Support
  • Assist with maintaining fitness equipment in safe and proper operating condition.
  • Clean and inspect fitness equipment according to established procedures.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, maintenance concerns, or safety issues promptly.
  • Submit work requests and communicate with equipment representatives as directed.
  • Assist with maintaining an organized, clean, and professional Wellness Center environment.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain current knowledge of exercise science, fitness training, wellness, and related professional practices.
  • Participate in required training, continuing education, staff meetings, and competency assessments.
  • Maintain required professional certifications and CPR/AED certification.
  • Protect patient and member confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and Hopedale Medical Complex policies and procedures when handling protected health information.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with physicians, patients, members, families, employees, and outside organizations.
  • Support the mission and values of Hopedale Medical Complex.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives designed to improve member and patient outcomes, satisfaction, safety, and utilization of Wellness Center resources.
  • Provide input regarding member needs, potential new equipment, classes, and wellness programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Physical Education, or a related health or fitness field preferred.
  • Current nationally recognized personal training certification or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain certification upon hire.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, exercise principles, fitness assessment, and personal training techniques.
  • Knowledge of safe exercise practices and appropriate modifications for individuals with varying fitness levels and abilities.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of varying ages, abilities, fitness levels, and health needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous personal training or fitness instruction experience.
  • Experience teaching group exercise classes.
  • Experience working in a healthcare, wellness, rehabilitation, or fitness environment.
  • Additional nationally recognized fitness or wellness certifications.
  • Experience working with individuals with chronic health conditions or special exercise considerations.

Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in the Hopedale Medical Complex Wellness Center and may include exposure to exercise equipment, weights, fitness-related noise, cleaning products, and varying temperatures.
The Fitness Instructor may interact with individuals of varying ages, physical abilities, fitness levels, and health conditions. The employee is expected to maintain a professional, supportive, and inclusive environment while following all applicable safety, infection prevention, emergency response, and organizational policies.
