What is an independent contractor developer?

Independent Contractor Developers are self-employed professionals who provide software development services to clients on a contract basis, rather than as full-time employees. They typically work on specific projects or tasks outlined in an agreement, and have the flexibility to choose their clients and set their own schedules. These developers are responsible for managing their own taxes, benefits, and business operations, and they may work remotely or onsite depending on client needs. This arrangement allows businesses to access specialized skills without committing to long-term employment contracts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Developer, you need strong programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a portfolio demonstrating successful project delivery. Familiarity with popular coding languages, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are often required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management help you coordinate with clients and meet project deadlines. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality solutions independently while maintaining client satisfaction and building a strong professional reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor developers when managing multiple client projects simultaneously?

Independent Contractor Developers often juggle several projects at once, which requires effective time management and communication skills. Balancing overlapping deadlines, adapting to different client expectations, and handling administrative tasks like invoicing can be challenging. To succeed, it's important to set clear boundaries, maintain transparent communication with clients, and use project management tools to stay organized. Networking with other contractors can also provide valuable support and advice for overcoming these hurdles.

Job description

Description

Who we are:

Falconi US is a specialized management consulting firm focused on the manufacturing sector, delivering operational excellence, supply chain optimization and private equity value creation. Headquartered in Chicago, IL, our team partners with mid-market and large manufacturers, as well as private equity firms investing in industrial businesses, to drive measurable financial and operational improvements. Built on a foundation of strategic execution and performance acceleration, Falconi US applies data-driven insights and proven methodologies to help clients optimize operations, improve profitability, and achieve sustainable growth.

About the role:
We are currently building our talent pool of Contractors interested in joining future strategic implementation projects. These temporary assignments typically last around 4 months and require working on-site at various client locations across the United States and potentially on international projects in other countries. As a Contractor, you will support the design and implementation of management solutions focused on improving client performance and delivering measurable results. You will work closely with client teams, applying structured methodologies, monitoring execution, and adapting strategies as needed to ensure project success.

Key Responsibilities:

Understand the client's strategic goals and ensure alignment between project execution and organizational objectives.

Collect, organize, and analyze data to generate structured insights and support decision-making.

Evaluate performance, identify improvement opportunities, and develop action plans.

Apply methodologies such as PDCA and SDCA to drive operational excellence.

Develop or adapt tools to automate data analysis and improve decision-making speed and accuracy.

Manage tasks and priorities to meet deadlines and maintain quality standards.

Present project findings, action plans, and progress clearly and confidently to client stakeholders.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams and guide team members when needed.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Economics, or related fields (Master's or MBA preferred).

Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in consulting, project management, operations, manufacturing, or supply chain.

Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; knowledge of tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, R, or Python is a plus.

Project management certifications (e.g., PMP, Scrum) are desirable.

Preferred Attributes:

Proactive, results-oriented, and adaptable in fast-paced environments.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Self-driven with a high sense of ownership and accountability.

Comfortable working independently and on diverse, cross-functional teams.

Willingness and availability to travel extensively and work on-site with clients.

This role requires frequent national and international travel with on-site presence at client locations to implement projects. The Contractor will work directly with client teams, assess operations, troubleshoot issues, and drive efficiency. Travel flexibility (usually from Monday to Friday) is essential based on project needs.
