An Independent Contractor Closet Installer is a self-employed professional who designs, assembles, and installs custom closet systems in homes or businesses. Unlike employees, they typically work on a project-by-project basis for various clients or companies, managing their own schedules and business operations. Their tasks may include measuring spaces, advising clients on design options, and ensuring proper installation of shelving, drawers, and other storage solutions. They usually supply their own tools and are responsible for their own taxes and insurance.

Job description

Cabinet / Closet Installer

Closet Factory of Western Michigan is looking for a dependable, skilled Cabinet / Closet Installer to join our production and installation team in Kalamazoo.

We design and manufacture custom closets, home offices, pantries, garages, entertainment centers, and other custom storage solutions for homes throughout West Michigan. Our products are manufactured locally in our Kalamazoo facility and professionally installed in our clients' homes.

This is a full-time, hourly employee position for someone who enjoys working with their hands, takes pride in quality craftsmanship, and wants to see a project through from the shop to the finished installation.

What You'll Do

As an installer, you will be responsible for delivering the quality and attention to detail our clients expect from a custom-built product.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review upcoming installations and project information before leaving the shop.
  • Inspect and quality-check materials before loading.
  • Load company vehicles with the materials, tools, and hardware needed for each project.
  • Travel to client homes throughout our West Michigan service area.
  • Professionally install custom closets, cabinetry, shelving, and other organization systems.
  • Accurately measure, level, fit, trim, assemble, and adjust components in the field.
  • Protect the client's home and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Identify and communicate missing, damaged, or incorrectly manufactured components.
  • Complete installation documentation and job reporting accurately.
  • Walk through the completed project with the client.
  • Assist with service and warranty work when necessary.
  • Work closely with our factory, production, design, and scheduling teams to resolve issues and deliver a great client experience.
What We're Looking For

The right person does not need to know everything about custom closets on day one, but must be dependable, mechanically inclined, willing to learn, and committed to doing quality work.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience with cabinetry, finish carpentry, construction, remodeling, furniture assembly, millwork, or a similar trade.
  • Experience safely using common hand and power tools.
  • Strong measuring and basic math skills.
  • Attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in the field.
  • Good communication and customer-service skills.
  • Dependable attendance and the ability to arrive ready to work.
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • The physical ability to lift, carry, maneuver, and install cabinetry and related materials.

Prior cabinet or closet installation experience is valuable, but we are also interested in candidates with transferable construction or mechanical skills who are willing to learn our installation methods.

Compensation

This is an hourly position with additional performance-based earning opportunities.

In addition to hourly wages, installers can participate in our structured installation bonus program. The program rewards the installation team based on completed work and each installer's participation in the installation of qualifying projects.

Specific compensation will depend on experience and qualifications and will be discussed during the hiring process.

Schedule

This is a full-time position based out of our Kalamazoo manufacturing facility at:

2309 N. Burdick Street
Kalamazoo, MI 49007

Installations take place in clients' homes throughout our West Michigan service area, so daily travel from our Kalamazoo facility is part of the position.

About Closet Factory of Western Michigan

Closet Factory creates truly custom organization systems designed around each client's home, needs, and lifestyle. Unlike modular or one-size-fits-all systems, our projects are individually designed and manufactured for each client.

Our Western Michigan operation combines design, local manufacturing, and professional installation under one team. The installer is the person who brings all of that work together in the client's home, making this one of the most important roles in our company.

We are looking for someone who wants to become part of that team, develop their skills, and take pride in the finished product they leave behind.
