What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor carpenters, and how can they be managed?

Independent contractor carpenters often encounter challenges such as managing inconsistent workloads, sourcing their own materials, and handling administrative tasks like invoicing and scheduling. Unlike salaried carpenters, independents are responsible for securing their own projects and maintaining client relationships, which requires strong networking and communication skills. To manage these challenges, many carpenters develop a reliable network of suppliers, use project management tools, and build a consistent client base through referrals and quality workmanship. Staying organized and proactive is key to success in this role.

What is the difference between Independent Contractor Carpenter vs Journeyman Carpenter?

AspectIndependent Contractor CarpenterJourneyman Carpenter
CredentialsTypically requires a high school diploma, carpentry experience, and possibly state licensing or certificationRequires completion of an apprenticeship program and a journeyman certification or license
Work EnvironmentWorks independently on various projects, often self-employed or contractedWorks for employers or contractors, often on-site at construction or renovation projects
Employer & Industry UsageHired directly by clients or through contracting firms, common in residential and commercial projectsEmployed by construction companies or unions, involved in large-scale projects

While both roles require carpentry skills, an Independent Contractor Carpenter operates independently and manages their own projects, whereas a Journeyman Carpenter works under an employer or contractor with formal certification. The choice depends on your career goals and preferred work environment.

What is an independent contractor carpenter?

An Independent Contractor Carpenter is a skilled tradesperson who works on a self-employed basis to provide carpentry services for residential, commercial, or industrial projects. Unlike employees, independent contractors typically manage their own schedules, supply their own tools, and negotiate contracts directly with clients or general contractors. They may be hired for tasks such as framing, installing cabinetry, building furniture, or completing repairs. Independent Contractor Carpenters are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and business expenses. This role requires both carpentry expertise and business management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor carpenter?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Carpenter, you need strong carpentry skills, knowledge of building codes, and experience with construction techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with power tools, blueprint reading, and estimating software is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and customer service skills help you manage projects and client relationships effectively. These competencies are essential for delivering quality workmanship, maintaining safety, and ensuring client satisfaction in a competitive market.

Inside Out Home Improvements

Burton, MI • On-site

Contractor

Re-posted 26 days ago

Job description

About the Role

As a contracted roofer with Inside Out Home Improvements LLC, you will perform roofing installations, tear‐offs, repairs, and related carpentry tasks as assigned through Work Orders. Each project includes a clearly defined scope, location, and compensation structure.

We work primarily on residential homes and expect contractors to deliver work that meets or exceeds industry standards, manufacturer specifications, and Michigan building codes.

Responsibilities

  • Complete roofing installations, tear‐offs, and repairs according to project specifications

  • Perform work in a professional, workmanlike manner consistent with industry standards

  • Follow all jobsite safety requirements and maintain a clean, safe work environment

  • Review and execute Work Orders before beginning any project

  • Communicate effectively with project managers regarding progress and needs

  • Correct any defective or non‐conforming work at your own expense

  • Provide your own tools, equipment, transportation, and protective gear

  • Maintain required insurance and provide proof upon request

Requirements

  • Proven experience in residential roofing (asphalt shingles required; metal or flat roofing is a plus)

  • Ability to perform full installations, not just repairs

  • Must operate as a true independent contractor—you control your methods, schedule, and labor

  • Must provide your own tools, equipment, and transportation

  • General Liability Insurance ($1M/$2M) required

  • Workers’ Compensation coverage or valid exemption

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to work safely and efficiently

  • Must submit a W‐9 and Certificate of Insurance listing Inside Out Home Improvements LLC as certificate holder

  • Must adhere to non‐solicitation and confidentiality requirements outlined in the IC Agreement

Compensation

Compensation is defined per project and outlined in each Work Order. Pay structures may include:

  • Lump‐sum pricing

  • Per‐square or per‐unit pricing

  • Milestone‐based payouts

Payments are issued via ADP or approved alternative methods. No taxes are withheld.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

  • You choose your methods, schedule, and workflow

  • Consistent project opportunities with a reputable remodeling company

  • Clear scopes, fair pricing, and organized project management

  • No micromanagement—just expectations for quality and professionalism

  • Strong, long‐term contractor relationships

How to Apply

If you are a skilled roofer who takes pride in your work and prefers the freedom of independent contracting, we’d like to hear from you. Apply today with your experience, availability, and insurance details.
