ROLE OVERVIEW

Title: NetSec Engineer L3 (Contractor)
Department: Managed Operations
Classification: Independent Contractor (Hourly)
Reports to: Sr Director of Security
Location: Remote
Travel: Up to 60% (as required per engagement)
Contract Type: Project-based / Ongoing hourly engagement

ENGAGEMENT SUMMARY

The NetSec Engineer L3 (Contractor) is responsible for delivering high-quality security and network engineering services across client engagements. This role focuses on executing scoped work, contributing to project delivery, and providing subject matter expertise across security technologies.

The contractor operates under the direction of a Principal Engineer and/or Engagement Lead and is accountable for delivering assigned tasks on time, within scope, and aligned with client expectations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Delivery

  • Execute assigned project tasks aligned to defined scope, timelines, and deliverables
  • Design, implement, and validate secure network and security solutions
  • Review client environments and recommend secure configurations and improvements
  • Develop technical documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer materials
  • Participate in or lead technical discussions with client stakeholders

Technical Execution

  • Provide hands-on engineering across security and networking technologies
  • Perform system configuration, deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization
  • Contribute to threat modeling, architecture reviews, and security design recommendations
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex issues when required
  • Independently research and propose solutions for client challenges

Client Engagement

  • Collaborate directly with client technical teams to gather requirements and deliver solutions
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Support presentation of technical solutions, including occasional executive-level communication
  • Maintain professionalism and represent GMI standards during all engagements

Collaboration & Quality

  • Work closely with internal engineering teams and engagement leads
  • Participate in peer reviews and quality assurance of deliverables
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of delivery methodologies and technical standards

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have hands-on experience in at least four (4) of the following areas:

  • Core Networking (routing, switching)
  • Next-Generation Firewalls (Cisco ASA/Firepower, Palo Alto, Fortinet)
  • IDS/IPS (Snort, Sourcefire, Palo Alto, TippingPoint)
  • Endpoint Security / EDR (CrowdStrike, McAfee, Symantec, Cylance)
  • Secure Email Gateways (Proofpoint, Cisco IronPort ESA)
  • Systems Administration (Windows and/or Linux; on-prem, virtual, or cloud)
  • Network Access Control (Cisco ISE, Aruba ClearPass, Forescout)

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years in security engineering, consulting, or implementation roles
  • OR 10+ years of overall experience in network/security engineering

Skills

  • Strong understanding of enterprise network and security architecture
  • Ability to manage and execute work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proven experience delivering solutions in complex enterprise environments
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
  • Effective communication across technical teams and leadership levels

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Industry certifications such as Cisco, Palo Alto, or CrowdStrike are preferred

ENGAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS

  • Work is billed on an hourly basis with pre-approved scope and estimates
  • Contractor is responsible for accurate time tracking and reporting
  • Availability must align with project needs and agreed schedules
  • Deliverables must meet defined quality and documentation standards
  • May support multiple concurrent client engagements
