Independent Associate information

What is an independent associate?

Independent Associates are self-employed professionals who partner with a company to promote and sell its products or services, typically on a commission or incentive basis. They operate independently, setting their own schedules and managing their own client relationships, rather than being traditional employees. This role is common in industries like direct sales, network marketing, or legal and financial services. Independent Associates often have the flexibility to build their own business while leveraging the resources and support of the parent company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent associate?

To thrive as an Independent Associate, you generally need strong sales acumen, business development skills, and a foundational understanding of the products or services you represent. Familiarity with CRM platforms, online marketing tools, and relevant certifications in sales or the specific industry can be highly beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and effective time management set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for building client relationships, meeting sales targets, and maintaining autonomy in a competitive environment.

How does an independent associate typically manage their workflow and client communications to ensure success?

As an Independent Associate, you often have significant autonomy in organizing your schedule, prioritizing leads, and maintaining client relationships. Success in this role usually depends on your ability to set clear goals, use effective time management strategies, and leverage digital tools for tracking communications and follow-ups. Regular check-ins with mentors or team leaders, even in a primarily independent setting, can help you stay aligned with best practices and company objectives. Additionally, proactively networking and staying responsive to client inquiries are essential for building trust and expanding your client base.

What is the difference between Independent Associate vs Sales Representative?

AspectIndependent AssociateSales Representative
CredentialsVaries; often no formal certification requiredTypically requires sales or industry-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentSelf-employed, flexible hours, remote or home-basedEmployed by a company, often in office or retail settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across direct sales, network marketing, and consulting industriesCommon in retail, wholesale, and B2B sales sectors

While both roles involve sales activities, an Independent Associate usually operates independently, often in direct sales or network marketing, with flexible hours and no formal employer. A Sales Representative typically works for a company, following structured sales processes and earning commissions or salaries. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job opportunity.

Job description

Conifer Wellness is looking to expand! We are a small, independently owned outpatient mental health clinic with locations in downtown Portland and downtown Corvallis. Conifer's framework is based on the crazy notion that clinicians are people too, and our aim is to provide our therapists with a healthy work/life balance. We are also committed to remaining an independent and close-knit organization, so we can retain autonomy over our clinical and company policies. The admin are easy to reach; you will not work for The Faceless Boss here! We’re committed to working together, not only to achieve the highest standards of care and affect positive community change, but also to support each other as a cohesive team. Conifer’s admins communicate informally throughout the day to solve problems, collaborate, and brainstorm. We don’t see anything wrong with saying “I don’t know...but I’ll find out.”

Working at Conifer Wellness combines the benefits of independent practice (schedule flexibility and greater autonomy) and clinic employment, (administrative staff to wrestle through all the red tape). Job responsibilities generally include:

  • 24 scheduled appointments, with an expectation of at least 20 completed appointments weekly
  • Timely documentation that meets OHA and insurance reimbursement standards
  • General auxiliary client care such as responding to emails and returning phone calls
  • Collaborating with community resources for referrals and care coordination as needed
  • Communicating with admin staff as needed on their tasks such as billing or credentialing

Other optional activities include community outreach or supervising an associate (if you meet the board's qualifications). We're also always open to ideas on how to provide help for people and keep the job stimulating for clinicians!

We believe taking care of our clinicians is crucial to helping your clients. Your relationships with clients are what helps them the most, and you need to be able to lend them your strength. In our efforts to support you, we offer the following benefits to full-time employees:

  • Health, vision, and dental insurance covered 100% for employees. We do our best to select the best possible insurance we can, meaning low deductibles and low out-out-pocket maximums. Our health insurance policy changes annually, of course, but it generally covers chiropractic, massage therapy, actupuncture, etc.
    • Insurance is covered 50% for dependents
  • Hybrid work schedule, if desired (typically two days in the office, two days telehealth)
    • Both of our offices are situated in historic buildings with original features and lots of natural light. The buildings are both located downtown, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and various businesses. The Portland location is ADA compliant, but the Corvallis office, as a historic building, is exempt.
  • Four-day work weeks are encouraged, Monday through Thursday
    • You are welcome to configure your schedule any way you like! Please note, office staff are not available Friday through Sunday
  • No call, no weekends
  • Paid admin time
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Student loan support
  • Maternity benefits
  • HIPAA-compliant EHR
  • E&O insurance
  • Company laptop
  • $750 annual allowance for licensure, professional development, and CEU
  • Comprehensive office management (billing, chasing down insurance companies, advertising, credentialing, etc. are taken care of for you!)
  • One-time office customization stipend, up to $300, to get you settled into your new space
  • Compensation is based on completed appointments. Pay ranges from $60,000 to over $80,000 a year

Successful applicants must have an unencumbered license to practice mental health in Oregon.

If you like the sound of working with a committed, authentic team, we would love to hear from you! Please include a cover letter along with your resume/CV.
