Definition Under the general supervision of the Vitality Program Manager, the Adaptive Recreation Coordinator designs, implements, and actively delivers daily wellness, recreational, and adaptive activities for older adults and adults with adaptive needs or behavioral health challenges. This position plays a direct, hands-on role in participant engagement, actively leading and assisting with programs that promote wellness, social connection, mobility, and independence. The Adaptive Recreation Coordinator ensures that participants requiring adaptive support are included in meaningful, person-centered activities designed to enhance quality of life.This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt
Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification. Examples of Tasks Personally lead, demonstrate, and actively assist in wellness activities, recreational games, fitness programs, social groups, and creative engagements adapted for participants' functional abilities.
Provide one-on-one and group support to participants during activities; assist with adaptive equipment, physical support, mobility, communication needs, and emotional regulation as necessary. Translate individualized service plans and adaptive strategies into daily activities that are accessible, engaging, and therapeutic for participants. Positively engage participants using de-escalation strategies, inclusive approaches, and activity adaptations to maximize participation and enjoyment.
Regularly update participants' engagement and needs; maintain open, respectful communication with family members and caregivers. Collaborate with Senior Services' social workers, transportation staff, nutrition team, and recreation and wellness programs to seamlessly integrate adaptive needs across services. Monitor participant safety during activities; maintain awareness of medical or behavioral risks and act swiftly and appropriately in emergencies.
Complete daily participant attendance logs, incident reports, and progress summaries; document adaptive support strategies that are effective for participants. Maintain and apply up-to-date knowledge of best practices in adaptive recreation, aging, disabilities, and behavioral health. Provide informal training, coaching, and modeling of adaptive best practices to frontline staff to improve inclusion, engagement, and support for participants with disabilities and behavioral health needs.
Develop simple resource guides, tip sheets, and activity adaptations to share with aides, drivers, kitchen staff, and recreation assistants to promote a unified approach to participant care. Act as a knowledge resource for colleagues when questions arise about adaptive strategies, behavioral management, or participant inclusion. Support the development of a culture of inclusion, compassion, and proactive participant engagement across Senior Services programs.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Senior Manager or the Senior Services Directors. Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of the culture, history, and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Knowledge of federal, state, SRPMIC, and local laws, codes, rules, regulations, and standards that apply to recreation facility maintenance and operations. Knowledge of a variety of recreational programs for seniors.
Knowledge of procedures for developing and implementing a variety of recreational and related activities and programs for seniors through Community participation. Knowledge at a basic level of geriatrics and the aging process. Knowledge of a variety of assistive devices, including but not limited to a cane, walker, and wheelchair.
Knowledge of how to care for senior participants in a safe and structured fashion. Skill organizing, promoting, and operating public events and recreation programs. Skill assessing client social and recreational needs.
Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC co-workers, Community Members, seniors, families, other service providers, and the public. Skill operating a variety of standard office equipment, including photocopiers and personal computers, to fulfill job requirements. Skill planning, scheduling, and time management.
Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to utilize the personal computer and related software, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office. Ability to maintain and promote safe practices for the operation of recreational equipment.
Ability to develop, plan, organize, and implement recreation programs and activities. Ability to perform first aid and CPR techniques. Ability to work non-standard work hours.
Ability to drive various SRPMIC vehicles, including the 15-passenger van. Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Behavioral Health, Gerontology, Special Education, Rehabilitation, or closely related field. Preferred, certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or equivalent Two (2) years' hands-on experience leading activities for adults or seniors with disabilities, behavioral health challenges, or chronic conditions in a recreation, wellness, or care setting.
Certifications: CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days) Fingerprint Clearance Card from the State of Arizona (or ability to obtain within 30 days) Article 9 certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 30 days) Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered. Special Requirements May be required to work after normal business hours including evenings, weekends and holidays. May be required to work in various weather conditions.
May be required to stand and/or walk for extended periods. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, including fingerprinting, and have no prior convictions of offenses to children or elders. Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
