Job description

Entry-Level and Lateral Single Role Paramedics

We are looking for Entry-Level and Lateral Single Role Paramedics! Albany Fire Department is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for future openings. These positions are regular, full-time, and are represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Annual Range: $81,947 to $104,588 (estimated based on established hourly rates plus built-in overtime - actual earnings may vary based on hours worked). Annual range includes a 7% rate increase which will go into effect July 1, 2026. We value prior experience. Starting rate placement within the posted range will be determined based on consecutive years of full-time, paid paramedic experience, in accordance with applicable equal pay laws.

Application Process & Screening Timeline: Applications will be reviewed as received and initial virtual interviews will take place weekly or biweekly. Applications received on or after July 16th will be reviewed and considered as needed, and this recruitment may be closed at any time after July 16th without prior notice. Completion of the application process includes the following requirements. Each of the following must be submitted prior to being considered.

    • Current EMT-Paramedic license or proof of enrollment in paramedic school.
      • Candidates must possess a Paramedic license OR be currently enrolled in an accredited paramedic program with an anticipated graduation date on or before September 1, 2026.
      • Candidates who are not currently licensed paramedics must provide proof of enrollment and anticipated graduation date at time of application.

Lateral Incentives:

  • Starting salary commensurate with experience.
  • Front-loaded vacation will be granted upon fire chief approval.

Salary & Specialty Incentives:

  • EMS Field Trainer Incentive: $123.05 semi-monthly; $2,953.28 annually
  • Spanish or American Sign Language Incentive: $123.05 semi-monthly; $2,953.28 annually
  • Longevity Incentive:
    • 3% at 10 years of service
    • 6% at 15 years of service
    • 9% at 20 years of service

Shift Schedule:

  • 1:3, 2:3 schedule (24 hrs on followed by 72 hours off; then 48 hrs on followed by 72 hrs off)

Benefits include:

  • Full medical, vision and dental (Download PDF reader) coverage for employee and all eligible dependents with City paying approximately 95% of premium. Currently, the employee-paid premium is $136.50 for employee-only and family coverage.
  • 72 hours of personal leave frontloaded per fiscal year (pro-rated for mid-year hires based on hire date)
  • 12.5 hours of vacation leave per semi-monthly pay period, with progressive increases
  • 6 hours of sick leave per semi-monthly pay period
  • Excellent retirement benefits:
    • City-paid participation in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (OPSRP and IAP)
    • City-paid contribution of 2.5% into pre-tax deferred compensation plan
Essential Functions/Duties & Responsibilities

Performs emergency aid activities in accordance with department standing orders, including driving ambulances, administering advanced life support (ALS) treatment within applicable scope as authorized in the Linn/Benton County Clinical Guidelines, and transports patients. Supports the Life Safety Division's programs through public education and community outreach; performs related work as required. The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.

  1. Responds to non-emergency and emergency medical responses; operates within the Incident Command System; and provides ALS/BLS level emergency medical care and transportation between medical facilities.
  2. Completes electronic medical documentation for each patient encounter in a complete, competent, and timely manner.
  3. Protects the privacy of all patient information in accordance with department privacy policies, procedures, and practices as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a healthcare provider.
  4. May access Protected Health Information (PHI) and other patient information only to the extent that it is necessary to complete job duties.
  5. Determines appropriate actions to take during emergency response activities and in performing program area activities or duties as assigned. May be the lead paramedic at emergency scenes and as such will provide direction to others in the coordination of patient care.
  6. Performs job duties in compliance with department operating procedures and city, county, state, and federal laws, and ordinances.
  7. Establishes, promotes, and maintains positive working relationships while promoting the fire department's mission, vision, and value statements.
  8. Maintains apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations.
  9. Performs housekeeping and minor repairs to department equipment, apparatus, facilities, and grounds.
  10. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  11. Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
  12. Fosters a cohesive work environment by building and maintaining respectful, professional relationships with colleagues, leadership, elected officials, and members of the public.
  13. Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  14. Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned and provides training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
  15. Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
  16. Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  17. Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Leadership:

Supervision/Lead Work Exercised

The single-role paramedic works under the guidance of duty battalion chief or lieutenant and under general supervision of a division chief. This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position will provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education and Experience Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Any other equivalent combination of experience/training that ensures the ability to perform the work requirements listed above. Special Requirements:

  1. Must have a current state of Oregon Paramedic certification upon job placement.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license upon job placement.
  3. Must meet the City's physical qualifications and pass a background check, medical and psychological exams, and drug screen prior to appointment at the entry level.
  4. Preference may be given for Spanish language bilingual skills.
  5. Use of tobacco products is prohibited subject to applicable agency policy and/or collective bargaining agreement.
  6. The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
