Job description


Under general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and direct supervision Director of Emergency Department, Assistant Nurse Manager or charge nurse, RN or LPN the emergency room technician performs direct patient care for an assigned number of patients. At all times, patient assignments will be determined by adjustment of emergency department patient census and current staffing levels for the overall patient care which are reviewed shift-to-shift. As determined by the Director, Assistant Nurse Manager the ED Tech will be assigned up to 40 hours per week and may rotate between day, night shift and weekends according to the needs of the unit and staff. The nurse is expected to function within the scope practice and approved policies, procedures, and regulations for the department and organization. The technician needs the ability to cope with frequent unpleasant sights/smells as well as deal with difficult patient/family. The ED Tech is responsible to assist the Charge nurse, RN or LPN with orientation, preceptorship for, ED Nurse Techs, students or Unit Secretaries assigned to unit. Must be able to work and relate in a professional, non-defensive manner with peers, physicians, mid-level providers, administration, patients, and visitors. Will be responsible to collect selected patient information and perform emergency patient care as directed by RN/LPN, document care given, assist with review and maintain patient chart per policy, and assist with accurate and timely entry of patient data, patient orders or charges into computer system. ED Tech must demonstrates responsibility for the monitoring and re-assessment of patient's vital signs in triage or back as directed by RN/LPN. Identify patients' needs/ concerns to RN/LPN or provider in triage/back for patient safety and patient satisfaction. Maintains clinical competence to perform any job duty within the scope of ED Tech competencies providing care for patient during procedures. Promotes unit and organizational philosophy and goals; involved in the development of unit goals. Supports and assists with staffing/scheduling policies to meet unit needs. Assists with establishment of departmental policies and procedures that reflect the services provided by the emergency department. Participates in organizational committees as assigned. Provides important information on trends related to patient outcomes to ED Director, assistant manager, charge nurse or RN/LPN. Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements: EMTALA, DNV and CMS. Demonstrates professionalism and reinforces professional behavior of staff members. Demonstrates knowledge and skill related to patient throughput and customer service / satisfaction. Pays close attention to the ED census with special emphasis on patient throughput. Addresses any patient concerns. Complete the yearly mandatory in-service (YMI) requirements is nonnegotiable and will be the responsibility of the employee to arrange and attend sessions and remain current on Healthstream assignments. DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: The ED Tech is expected to function within the ED Tech scope of practice, skill competencies and approved policies, procedures, and regulations for the department and organization. Assist RN in collection of data for assessment information to formulate plan of care. Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care depending on needs/problems identified during patient assessment assisting RN/LPN. Communicates patient needs to other disciplines and promotes discharge planning. Assisting in RN/LPN Assessing, monitoring and management of patients: presenting clinical, chronic, urgent or emergent situation May be responsible to assist the Charge nurse or RN/LPN with orientation, preceptorship for ED Techs, students or Unit Secretaries assigned to unit. Must be able to work and relate in a professional, non-defensive manner with peers, providers, administration, patients, and visitors. Ability to cope with frequent unpleasant sights/smells and difficult patient/family behaviors. Demonstrate and deliver patient centered care. Patient Advocate providing Patient Centered Care
