What is in place machining?

In place machining, also known as on-site or field machining, refers to performing precision machining operations directly at the equipment’s location rather than moving it to a machine shop. This service is commonly used for large, heavy, or immovable equipment found in industries like power generation, marine, and manufacturing. It helps minimize downtime, reduces transportation costs, and ensures that repairs or modifications are completed efficiently and accurately without dismantling entire assemblies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an in place machining technician?

To thrive as an In Place Machining Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with industrial machining processes, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with portable machining tools, alignment systems, and CNC equipment is commonly required, and certifications like OSHA or ASNT can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate on-site repairs, minimize downtime, and maintain safety and quality in demanding industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by in place machining professionals, and how can they be addressed?

In Place Machining professionals often work in environments where precision is critical and downtime must be minimized, such as power plants or manufacturing facilities. Common challenges include working in confined spaces, adapting to irregular or worn components, and maintaining safety standards while operating heavy equipment on-site. These challenges can be addressed through thorough job planning, use of specialized portable machining tools, continuous safety training, and strong communication with both clients and team members to ensure all requirements are clearly understood and met.

At TLR Hydraulics in Midlothian, TX, our Machinists support one of the busiest hydraulic cylinder repair and fabrication shops in the DFW area. You will set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment to produce, repair, and recondition hydraulic cylinder components, rods, and related parts for customers in construction, industrial, agricultural, and manufacturing sectors. Precision, quality control, and safe equipment operation are the foundation of this role. Every part you machine goes back into equipment that customers depend on to stay running.

If you are a skilled machinist with 2 to 5 years of experience, solid blueprint reading ability, and a commitment to quality work, we want to talk.

Compensation & Benefits

$25.00 - $33.00/hr based on experience. We take care of our team with a full benefits package:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Company-paid life, AD&D, and short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with a generous company match.
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays.
  • Tuition reimbursement — we invest in your development.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Voluntary benefit products.
What You'll Do

Precision Machining

  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment to produce, repair, and recondition components to precise specifications.
  • Machine hydraulic cylinder rods, barrels, pistons, and related components to manufacturer tolerances using lathes, mills, grinders, and related equipment.
  • Select appropriate tooling, feeds, speeds, and machining sequences for each job based on material and specification requirements.
  • Perform honing and surface finishing operations on cylinder bores and rod surfaces as required.

Quality Control and Inspection

  • Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and dial indicators to verify dimensional accuracy throughout the machining process.
  • Inspect finished components for conformance to blueprints, technical drawings, and quality standards before release.
  • Identify and document any non-conforming parts and escalate appropriately.

Fabrication and Shop Support

  • Assist with welding, fabrication, and component repair tasks as needed to support the hydraulic cylinder repair operation.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and adjust setups to maintain accuracy and production efficiency.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machining environment in compliance with all shop safety procedures.
  • Complete accurate paperwork and work orders for all jobs performed.
What We're Looking For

Must Have:

  • 2 to 5 years of machining experience in a manufacturing, repair, or hydraulic service environment.
  • Solid knowledge of machining practices, tolerances, and metalworking techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and measurements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods throughout a shift.
  • High school diploma or GED.
