In Pickleball information

What are in and out calls in pickleball?

In pickleball, 'in' and 'out' calls refer to whether a ball has landed within the boundaries of the court or outside of them. If the ball lands on or inside the boundary lines, it is considered 'in' and play continues. If the ball lands completely outside the lines, it is 'out', and the rally ends with a point or side out awarded accordingly. Players are responsible for making these calls on their side of the court, and honesty is emphasized to ensure fair play.

What are some common challenges faced by pickleball instructors when teaching group classes, and how can they be addressed?

Pickleball instructors often encounter challenges such as managing varying skill levels within a single group and ensuring that all participants stay engaged. To address this, instructors can use a variety of drills tailored to different abilities and rotate players through different stations or partners. Clear communication, setting group goals, and fostering a positive, inclusive environment also help keep classes productive and enjoyable for everyone. Regular feedback and encouragement can further boost participant confidence and learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pickleball coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pickleball Coach, you need a solid understanding of pickleball rules, techniques, strategies, and typically some coaching or teaching experience or certification. Familiarity with video analysis tools, court management software, and first aid certification can be beneficial. Strong communication, motivational skills, and patience help coaches connect with players and foster effective learning. These skills ensure coaches can develop players’ abilities, maintain safety, and create a positive, productive training environment.

Job description

Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Pickleball Pro delivers instruction at a high level and builds a personal book of business. This is a revenue-generating role: the Pro is accountable for lesson volume, client retention, and the instructional revenue they personally produce.

Pros are the most visible representatives of the club on court. Every session is both instruction and the PickleRage Experience delivered in person.

This position is a W-2 employee, paid an hourly rate for all hours worked plus commission on personally generated instructional revenue. This position reports to the Program Manager.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND OUTCOMES

  • Teach at standard. Deliver private lessons, group lessons, clinics, and player-development sessions that produce measurable improvement and repeat bookings.
  • Build and hold a personal book. Grow lesson volume through rebooking, package sales, and referral. A Pro who teaches well but does not rebook is not performing.
  • Deliver the PickleRage Experience. Set the tone on court — on time, prepared, engaged, and present with members before and after the session.
  • Support club programming. Staff clinics, leagues, and events as scheduled, at the same standard as private instruction. Pros should communicate and funnel players to events, mixers, leagues, tournaments.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction and Player Development

  • Teach private lessons, semi-private lessons, group lessons, clinics, intro-to-pickleball programs, and player-development sessions.
  • Assess player level accurately and place members into the appropriate programs, leagues, and open-play sessions.
  • Maintain and apply a consistent teaching methodology and curriculum across all instruction.
  • Maintain current teaching certification and pursue continuing education as required.

Revenue and Book Building

  • Own personal lesson volume. Meet or exceed the lesson volume expectations for the role each pay period.
  • Rebook at the point of service. Schedule the next session before the current one ends. Rebooking rate is a measured expectation.
  • Sell packages, not sessions. Convert single-lesson clients into multi-session packages and standing weekly slots.
  • Convert the floor. Identify prospects during open play, leagues, and events, and convert them into paid instruction and club programming.
  • Support membership growth. Promote membership to non-member lesson clients and refer prospects to the front desk.

On-Court Presence and Member Experience

  • Maintain an active presence during open play, leagues, tournaments, round robins, mixers, and club events as scheduled.
  • Know members by name and playing level. Engage new and unaccompanied players and integrate them into the community.
  • Enforce court etiquette, rotation, and safety standards during all sessions and assigned floor time.
  • Report member issues, facility problems, and at-risk members to the Program Manager same day.

Standards and Administration

  • Manage the schedule in the system. Book, confirm, and close out every lesson in the club booking platform. Unrecorded lessons do not count toward commission.
  • Honor the cancellation and no-show policy. Apply club policy consistently to every client.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, training sessions, and quarterly coach meetings.
  • Adhere to uniform, conduct, and brand standards at all times on club property.
  • Support club social media by providing content from lessons, clinics, and events as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION STRUCTURE

This position is compensated as a W-2 employee under a base-plus-commission model:

  • Base hourly pay. Paid at the approved hourly rate for all compensable hours worked, including instruction and other assigned work, through normal payroll.
  • Performance commission. A percentage of qualifying Personal Revenue, tiered by the number of lessons completed in the bi-weekly pay period: 30% at 15 lessons or fewer, 40% at 16 to 23 lessons, and 50% at 24 or more lessons.

Personal Revenue includes revenue from lessons, clinics, and other qualifying instructional services personally conducted by the employee as defined by the compensation plan.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated ability to teach pickleball at a high level to beginner through advanced players.
  • Teaching certification from PPR, IPTPA, or equivalent required, or obtained within an agreed period of hire.
  • Competitive playing ability and a current or established rating.
  • Prior experience as a pro, coach, or instructor in pickleball, tennis, or another racquet sport preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and retain a client book. Comfort asking for the rebook and selling packages is required, not preferred.
  • Court Reserve or comparable booking platform experience a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral, written, and listening.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive environment through interaction with members, guests, and staff.
  • Availability to work club operating hours, including evenings, weekends, and select holidays, per facility and demand.
  • Ability to meet timekeeping, scheduling, and documentation requirements consistently.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Onsite at the PickleRage facility. This is an on-court role in a professional, sports-centric environment that includes court play, retail, and member services. Nearly all working time is spent in front of members and guests.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to play, demonstrate, and instruct pickleball for prolonged periods, including running, bending, reaching, and rapid directional change. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to set up and break down courts, nets, and equipment, and to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED

None. This position may mentor newer coaches as assigned by the Program Manager.
