What do journalists do?

Journalists research, write, and report news stories for newspapers, magazines, websites, television, or radio. They investigate current events, interview sources, verify facts, and present information in a clear and unbiased manner. Journalists play a crucial role in keeping the public informed and holding individuals and institutions accountable. Their work may involve covering local, national, or international news across a wide range of topics.

How do journalists typically collaborate with editors and other team members to develop a story?

Journalists work closely with editors throughout the reporting and writing process, frequently pitching story ideas, receiving feedback, and revising drafts based on editorial guidance. They may also coordinate with photographers, graphic designers, and digital producers to ensure stories are visually engaging and optimized for different platforms. Effective communication and openness to constructive criticism are essential, as teamwork is key to producing accurate and compelling journalism. This collaborative environment helps journalists refine their storytelling skills and adapt to different editorial standards and deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in journalism, and why are they important?

To thrive in journalism, you need strong writing, research, and interviewing skills, often supported by a degree in journalism or communications. Familiarity with content management systems, digital publishing tools, and multimedia editing software is typically required. Outstanding journalists also excel at critical thinking, adaptability, and ethical decision-making. These skills are essential for producing accurate, engaging stories and maintaining credibility in a fast-paced, evolving media landscape.

Job description

Summary:

MediaNews Group, publisher of The Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News, Orange County Register, and more than 70 other daily newspapers and associated websites, is seeking a Senior Content Strategist to join its corporate editorial team. The Senior Content Strategist will lead a nimble team of editor-producers responsible for coordinating and sharing news and features between our publications and companies. The right candidate has strong news judgment as well as the technical skills needed to navigate a content management system. In addition to working with MNG's publications, you will also work closely with colleagues at Tribune Publishing, which includes the Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, and other prestigious publications.

While this is a remote role, candidates must reside in CO, FL, MA, MN, OH, PA, or TX

What you will do:

  • Identify trending content as it is posted across our network of sites to maximize audience reach by syndicating to relevant sites and channels

  • Use deep knowledge of newsroom production cadences to surface high-potential stories that haven't yet reached their peak, ensuring quality journalism gets the visibility it deserves

  • Communicate and engage with digital leads about those hidden gems

  • Edit and refine syndicated posts for clarity, accuracy, and tone, maintaining high standards as content moves between local and wire formats

  • Monitor and respond quickly to real-time breaking news, ensuring the network has prompt, accurate, and well-packaged updates

  • Manage workflows for team and publication production

  • Craft expert-level headlines and metadata that strike the perfect balance between SEO best practices and social media engagement

  • Collaborate with and serve as a bridge between MNG and Tribune journalists, coordinating collaborative coverage for major initiatives and special projects

  • Represent newsrooms on joint projects with circulation, advertising, and product teams

  • Partner with product and technical teams to evaluate, test, and implement the best CMS tools and workflows for shared content

  • Proactively source and manage third-party content vendors to diversify the network's offerings and fill niche content needs

  • Deep-dive into analytics to provide actionable feedback to newsrooms on story performance, audience trends, and content gaps

  • Supervise three full-time Content Strategists

What you will bring:

  • While management experience is a plus, you must demonstrate the ability to lead projects, mentor peers, and work side-by-side with stakeholders

  • Proven experience in a high-pressure daily newsroom or online news outlet

  • Deep familiarity with a variety of social media platforms and Content Management Systems (CMS) is required. Experience with WordPress is a plus

  • Proficiency in Google Analytics and/or real-time analytics platforms is required

  • Multitasking and organizational skills are key

  • A strong background in news writing and copy editing, including Associated Press style guidelines and ethics

  • Comfort working with remote teams and digital collaboration tools

  • The ability to handle deadlines and work as a team player

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, marketing, or equivalent experience

Benefits and Compensation:

The salary is $95,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
