Trainer
Department: Operations
Reports to: Director of Training & Operations
Status: Exempt
1. Job Purpose/Objective:
The Trainer sets the example for safety within the organization. In this role, the Trainer provides safety education and training in health and driver safety practices to all Drivers and Aides, for all subsidiaries of Roberts Hawaii, Inc. on all island locations. This position is responsible for instructing trainees in the proper procedures for pre-trip instructions, driving techniques, etc. per Department of Transportation (DOT) standards in order for them to qualify and obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B with Passenger Endorsement and be qualified to obtain an "S" endorsement. The Trainer will train drivers in preparing daily trip sheets, vouchers, and outline narratives to be used on various trips. In addition, this position prepares daily DOT regulation reports on types of training conducted, reporting any problems that have occurred.
2. Essential Job Functions:
Incumbent may perform any or all of the following:
  • Administrative:
    • Prepares classroom / office for daily training
    • Prepares material for classroom use (handouts, tests, videos, etc.)
    • Administers tests
    • Prepares daily agenda for training class
    • Produces company IDs for replacement / new employees
    • Communicates with various departments
    • Reports key performance indicator data as required
    • Represents the Company at all recruitment events and effectively hires employees into the Company
    • Attends all meetings
    • Utilizes strong computer skills to able to utilize Microsoft Office tools: PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Word
  • Instruction:
    • Sets ground rules - tardiness, attire, materials needed, attitude, commitment to excellence
    • Provides training and setting the course for obtaining a CDL
    • Presents Defensive Driving Course
    • Conducts training in Red Cross CPR, AED & First Aid
    • Participates in "Driver Surveillance" to ensure drivers are abiding with all safety requirements, regulations and policies as decreed by DOT and Company Policies & Procedures
    • Evaluates driver performance (in all transportation divisions)
    • Instructs Customer Service Courses to improve and set service standards
    • Trains Tour Classes
    • Conducts a minimum of four (4) required weekly field observations
    • Conducts training sessions for drivers that need to attend remedial courses
    • Conducts monthly tailgate meetings
    • Executes Road Evaluations
    • Able to train all courses offered by the safety department
  • Safety Performance:
    • Sets ground rules - tardiness, attire, materials needed, attitude, commitment to excellence
    • Provides training and setting the course for obtaining a CDL
    • Presents Defensive Driving Course

    • Engages with drivers and aides, establishing positive relationships to encourage safety within the organization and excellent service
    • Works positively with other departments (Express, Tours & Transportation, School Bus, Dispatch, Baggage, etc.) as a support unit
  • Other:
    • Relocates buses as needed
    • Fills in for dispatch as needed
    • Performs duties of driving when needed for any department at any time
    • Covers for other trainers as needed
    • Performs any and all additional duties as assigned or requested
  • Trainer Instructor Level 4
    • Possesses valid CDL "B" or "A" license
    • Must be eligible to obtain an "S" endorsement
    • Must be able to obtain a CDL B with P and S Endorsements within 3 months of hire
    • Meets physical requirements to pass D.O.T. physical with company physician
    • Meets Functional Capacity Exam requirements
    • Demonstrates effective coaching and performance development skills
    • Meets all qualifications and requirements of Essential Job Functions
  • Trainer Instructor Level 3
    • Qualified to conduct CDL Phase1 and 2 training for school bus vehicle types and motor coach vehicles
    • Qualified to conduct Express Shuttle and Airport Shuttle training
    • Qualified to conduct "Behind the Wheel" training on all vehicle types
    • Qualified to operate all vehicle types
    • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Email, Word computer programs
    • Meets all qualifications and requirements of Trainer Instructor Level 4 and Essential Job Functions
  • Trainer Instructor Level 2
    • Qualified to conduct all training programs (excluding Tour Science)
    • Supervise work performance of assigned Driver/Aide group. Conduct demonstrates taking initiative and use of good judgment. Attitude is reflective of company values and commitment to Safety and Service Excellence.
    • Supervisory responsibilities include but are not limited to conducting investigations/interviews; setting job performance expectations, coaching, and developing skills; providing recognition and disciplinary action, of assigned Driver / Aide group. Collaborate with Human Resources & Operations Manager on progressive disciplinary action. Administer discipline leading up to and including termination as appropriate.
    • Train new trainers
    • Meets all qualifications and requirements of Trainer Instructor Levels 3-4 and Essential Job Functions
  • Trainer Instructor Level 1:
    • Island Lead and / or conduct Tour Science training for designated Tour Trainer Subject Matter Experts (SME) on each island
    • Meets all qualifications and requirements of Trainer Instructor Levels 2-4 and Essential Job Functions.

3. Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) - i.e. skillsets, education, certifications, etc.:
  • 4-10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Type 3 Driver's License. Must obtain a CDL B or higher within three months of hire with a "P" endorsement and be qualified to obtain an "S" endorsement
  • Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends, afternoons, evenings, holidays
  • Working knowledge of island history, streets, locations of hotels, etc.
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, etc.
  • Able to speak effectively before groups of people
  • Able to type out routine reports and correspondence
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions

4. Working Conditions/Job Environment:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to travel for monthly/quarterly meetings. Some interisland day travel as needed.
