The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) is launching a major strategic initiative in implementation science to build upon a robust extramural research portfolio across disease areas. Recruitment is for tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-earning faculty at all ranks and includes academic appointment in one or more of 27 academic departments across the HSOM, many of which rank in the top 10 nationally in NIH funding for public institutions. All applications will be considered, but priority will be given to those with established research programs focused on: the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases (e.g., diabetes, obesity, hypertension), other chronic diseases (e.g., chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, sexually transmitted infections), women's health (e.g., maternal-child health), global health, mental health (e.g., addiction, substance use disorders, depression), cancer, surgical healthcare delivery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders.
Alabama is the domestic epicenter of chronic disease. For over 50 years, UAB has been a leader in biomedical research discovery to advance the health of the state, region, country, and world. Driven by an intensely collaborative and entrepreneurial character, UAB is one of the leading economic engines of the State, with a statewide economic impact exceeding $12 billion annually. UAB is Alabama's largest employer with more than 35,000 faculty and staff; it supports more than 53,000 jobs at the University. UAB ranks 21st in federal funding and 13th in NIH funding nationally among public universities (top 5%), with annual research expenditures exceeding $850 million. U.S. News and World Report 2024 "Best Hospitals" ranked seven UAB Medicine specialties among the top 50 of their kind and named UAB hospital the top hospital in Alabama. With more than 1,800 full time faculty, 1,100 residents and fellows, and more than 800 students, the UAB HSOM ranks 28th nationally (12th among public universities) in NIH research funding (over $250 million).
Building upon a strong foundation and vibrant research community at our academic medical center, the HSOM is committed to identifying investigators with mission-aligned research programs that leverage implementation and/or dissemination science to generate scholarship that translates evidence-based practices into routine care - and ultimately enhances individual and population health across our state and around the globe. Investigators with ongoing and recent work at the interface of translating evidence-based interventions into clinical, community or public health practice are encouraged to apply. The HSOM Health Across the Lifecourse (HEAL), one of four HSOM strategic research focus areas, is well aligned with this strategic recruitment initiative.
Successful applicants will join one of the strongest clinical and population health research environments in the country, including a rapidly growing collaborative community of implementation scientists. Centers & Institutes housed in the UAB HSOM focus on the specific areas of interest, including the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, one of over 60 Clinical and Translational Science Awards nationally, Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education, UAB Center for AIDS Research, Forge AHEAD Center, Comprehensive Healthy Living Research Center, Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center, Lung Health Center, Nephrology Research and Training Center, O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cancer Awareness, Research Engagement and Support (CARES) Center, Center for Research in Women's Health, Center for Addiction and Pain Prevention Intervention, Alzheimer's Disease Center, Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health, Institute for Cancer Outcomes Survivorship, Center for Engagement in Disability Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation.
The scientists recruited through this initiative are expected to build upon and expand outstanding, independent research programs. They will work independently and collaboratively to undertake innovative scientific discoveries, produce scientifically impactful work, grow extramural funding, engage in and promote research training of learners at all levels, and support the critical service missions of the University in delivering and improving health care.
