JLL - Engineering Manager (M1)

Work Schedule: Onsite, M-F 7:30 AM-4:30 PM + on call expectation

Travel Requirements: local travel due to splitting time between our clients Round Rock HQ and north Austin Campus

Reports to: Regional Facilities Manager

Estimated base salary range: $97,400 - $119,200+

What this job involves:

As an Engineering Manager at JLL, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing all engineering operations for a designated client. You will lead a team of engineers, technicians, and vendors to ensure effective maintenance activities and continuous operation of all building systems, with a strong emphasis on central plant operations and critical infrastructure, including chilled water systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, HVAC and controls, electrical distribution, emergency power systems, UPS/PDU systems, fire/life safety, plumbing, and other critical building systems.

Your primary objective will be to maintain and optimize the reliability, performance, and efficiency of the client's facilities while ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and client engineering standards.

This role requires a strong engineering background with demonstrated central plant and critical infrastructure experience, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders. A successful candidate will be an assertive engineering leader who can provide technical direction, communicate effectively, understand the complexities of a cross-functional organization, and balance business needs with sound engineering and maintenance practices.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Provide strategic direction and technical guidance to the engineering team to drive operational excellence in maintaining central plant, critical infrastructure, and building systems.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of central plant operations, including system performance, equipment reliability, capacity, redundancy, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and response to critical equipment failures.
  • Ensure central plant and critical building systems are operated and maintained in accordance with established operating parameters, manufacturer recommendations, applicable standards, and client requirements.
  • Oversee the planning, organization, and prioritization of work orders, preventive and predictive maintenance schedules, corrective maintenance, and projects to ensure timely execution while meeting quality standards.
  • Accountable for all hard services and critical infrastructure KPIs/SLAs and compliance measures.
  • Responsible for the creation, adherence, and review of work task administration such as Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), and applicable work permits.
  • Provide technical leadership during equipment failures, utility interruptions, loss of redundancy, and other critical infrastructure events, including appropriate escalation and coordination of corrective actions.
  • Key stakeholder in the development, training, and implementation of all Business Continuity Plans (BCPs), incident management, and emergency preparedness programming.
  • Effectively use and manage the CMMS to document all work activities, asset maintenance records, preventive maintenance, vendor maintenance, and invoicing.
  • Responsible for hard services quality assurance programming, including evaluating maintenance effectiveness, recurring equipment issues, and overall system reliability.
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, OEMs, and suppliers to secure best-in-class service delivery and cost-effective technical solutions.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of central plants, mechanical and electrical spaces, critical environments, building systems, and equipment to identify potential reliability, safety, maintenance, and compliance issues.
  • Support root-cause analysis and corrective action planning for significant or recurring equipment failures and infrastructure issues.
  • Implement energy-efficient initiatives, sustainability practices, and plant optimization strategies to optimize resource utilization and reduce operating costs without compromising system reliability.
  • Manage the budget for engineering services, ensuring adherence to financial targets and providing accurate cost forecasts.
  • Support lifecycle planning and capital forecasting for central plant, mechanical, electrical, and other critical infrastructure assets.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with the client, internal stakeholders, and external partners to understand their needs and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing engineering team, including hiring, technical training, development, and performance evaluations.
  • Drive the implementation of technology solutions, automation, condition monitoring, and innovation to improve operational efficiency and equipment reliability.
  • Ensure compliance with all EHS requirements, local health and safety regulations, applicable codes and standards, and client engineering requirements.
  • Travel to assigned portfolio as required.

Required qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in building engineering, maintenance, central plant operations, and/or critical environments and infrastructure.
  • Strong central plant experience required, with demonstrated knowledge of chilled water systems, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, HVAC systems and controls, electrical distribution, emergency power systems, and associated critical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience with the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability of complex mechanical and electrical building systems.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a team of engineers or technicians.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and building control systems.
  • Experience supporting critical or mission-critical environments where system reliability, redundancy, and uptime are essential.
  • Strong understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance practices and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Ability to provide technical direction during equipment failures, infrastructure incidents, and emergency conditions.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, regulations, safety requirements, and engineering compliance standards.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple technical and operational priorities effectively.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical issues, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficient in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Building Management Systems (BMS/BAS), and other related engineering software.
  • Willingness to work off-shift hours and weekends as needed to support emergencies, shutdowns, critical maintenance, or planned initiatives.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Relevant technical certifications or licenses in HVAC, electrical, mechanical, building systems, or critical facilities operations are preferred.
  • Experience working in a similar engineering leadership role within commercial real estate, integrated facilities management, or a large corporate facilities environment.
  • Experience supporting large or complex central utility plants and chilled water systems.
  • Experience supporting data centers, laboratories, manufacturing, technology, or other critical environments.
  • Familiarity with Energy Management Systems (EMS), Building Management Systems (BMS/BAS), and electrical power monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical and maintenance standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, and NFPA 70B.
  • Strong financial acumen and ability to manage operating budgets, capital planning, and infrastructure lifecycle requirements.
  • Proven ability to implement technology solutions, reliability improvements, and innovation in engineering operations.
