What is an immunotherapy engineer?

Immunotherapy Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize therapies that harness the immune system to fight diseases, especially cancer. They work at the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine, using advanced technologies to create and improve immunotherapies such as CAR-T cells, vaccines, and antibody treatments. Their responsibilities may include research, clinical trials, and the development of new biomaterials or delivery systems. Immunotherapy Engineers collaborate with scientists, clinicians, and regulatory experts to bring innovative treatments from the laboratory to the clinic. This field is rapidly evolving and plays a crucial role in the advancement of personalized medicine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an immunotherapy engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Immunotherapy Engineer, you need a solid background in biomedical engineering, molecular biology, and immunology, typically supported by a relevant degree or advanced research experience. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, cell culture systems, gene editing tools (such as CRISPR), and bioinformatics software is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills for innovation and collaboration in multidisciplinary environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing effective immunotherapies and advancing targeted treatments for complex diseases like cancer.

What are some typical challenges immunotherapy engineers face when developing new treatments, and how can they prepare for them?

Immunotherapy Engineers often encounter challenges related to the complexity of human immune responses and the variability in patient outcomes. Developing therapies that are both effective and safe requires rigorous testing, close collaboration with clinicians, and staying updated on regulatory standards. To prepare, engineers should cultivate strong problem-solving skills, maintain open communication with cross-disciplinary teams, and actively seek ongoing education about advances in immunology and biomanufacturing processes. This proactive approach helps in efficiently overcoming scientific and logistical hurdles in the development pipeline.

Job description

Company OverviewImmunityBio is a vertically integrated commercial stage biotechnology company developing next-generation therapies that bolster the natural immune system to defeat cancers and infectious diseases. The Company's range of immunotherapy and cell therapy platforms, alone and together, act to drive and sustain an immune response with the goal of creating durable and safe protection against disease. Designated an FDA Breakthrough Therapy, ANKTIVA is the first FDA-approved immunotherapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer CIS that activates NK cells, T cells, and memory T cells for a long-duration response. The Company is applying its science and platforms to treating cancers, including the development of potential cancer vaccines, as well as developing immunotherapies and cell therapies that we believe sharply reduce or eliminate the need for standard high-dose chemotherapy. These platforms and their associated product candidates are designed to be more effective, accessible, and easily administered than current standards of care in oncology and infectious diseases.
Why ImmunityBio?
โ€ข ImmunityBio is developing cutting-edge technology with the goal to transform the lives of patients with cancer and develop next-generation therapies and vaccines that complement, harness and amplify the immune system to defeat cancers and infectious diseases.
โ€ข Opportunity to join a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company with headquarters in Southern California.
โ€ข Work with a collaborative team with the ability to work across different areas of the company.
โ€ข Ability to join a growing company with professional development opportunities.

By integrating continuous delivery practices with robust infrastructure automation, the engineer accelerates feature rollout while maintaining stringent uptime and compliance standards. This position operates within a cross-functional team, collaborating closely with developers, quality-assurance engineers, security specialists, and product owners to align technical execution with broader business objectives. This role supports engineering leadership in driving appropriate change control, designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, and providing technical support for daily platform operations including the specification, deployment, and qualification of infrastructure systems.
Essential Functions
  • Architect and implement fully automated, reproducible environments using IaC tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible, maintaining version-controlled infrastructure definitions.
  • Build, tune, and maintain end-to-end CI/CD pipelines that integrate source-control triggers, automated testing, container registries, and release-gate policies to accelerate reliable code delivery.
  • Build, manage, and optimize Kubernetes cluster workloads, including deployment, networking, storage, Helm chart management, and resource governance.
  • Harden container images and enforce least-privilege principles; implement and maintain Kubernetes RBAC and network policies in alignment with security frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, SOC 2, ISO 27001).
  • Design and operate observability solutions (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic Stack), establishing dashboards, alerts, and incident-management processes to ensure rapid remediation.
  • Embed shift-left security testing, secret-management, and role-based access controls, and run automated vulnerability scans to meet standards.
  • Set up and maintain observability stacks including logging metrics and distributed tracing.
  • Embed security best practices into the development lifecycle and (DevSecOps).
  • Collaborate with developers, QA, product owners, and security teams; produce up-to-date documentation and lead knowledge-sharing activities to promote best practices and cross-team agility
  • Document infrastructure, architecture, runbooks and operational procedures.
  • Create, edit and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), process improvements, and standardization of templates.
  • Performs ad-hoc and cross-functional duties and/or projects as assigned to support business needs and provide developmental opportunities.

Education & Experience
