DeWitt LLP is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join our Intellectual Property Practice Group. The right candidate could sit in any of the following three locations: Brookfield, Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, or Minneapolis, Minnesota. This role is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment and enjoys supporting attorneys and clients in sophisticated intellectual property matters.

The successful candidate will bring prior experience in an intellectual property practice group and demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, strong communication skills, and impeccable calendaring management.

Position Summary

This role provides comprehensive legal assistant and paralegal support to attorneys practicing in intellectual property law, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, and related matters. The position requires someone who is proactive, adaptable, and eager to learn new processes and responsibilities as departmental needs evolve.

Responsibilities
  • Manage complex attorney calendars, deadlines, docketing, and scheduling with exceptional accuracy and attention to detail
  • Monitor and maintain critical filing deadlines for intellectual property matters
  • Prepare, revise, format, and proofread legal correspondence and IP-related documents
  • Coordinate electronic filings and maintain accurate client and matter records
  • Communicate professionally and proactively with attorneys, clients, courts, vendors, and government agencies
  • Assist with trademark and patent application processes, filings, renewals, and maintenance activities
  • Organize and maintain electronic and physical case files
  • Support billing, time entry, expense processing, and administrative tasks as needed
  • Identify workflow improvements and proactively assist the practice group with evolving departmental needs
  • Handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion

  • Prior experience working in an Intellectual Property legal practice group is required
  • Experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or hybrid legal support professional in a law firm environment
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong calendaring and deadline management abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and work independently in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong initiative and willingness to learn new systems, processes, and responsibilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and legal practice management software
  • Experience with IP docketing systems and USPTO filings preferred
