ASN also supports immigrants, refugees, and other underserved community members from diverse backgrounds.

OUR MISSION:To enable the well-being of Afghans through community, advocacy, and support.

OUR VISION: A future in which all Afghans prosper and contribute to the success of their communities.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Immigration Attorney provides direct immigration legal services and advocacy to Afghan and other immigrant community members including representation in removal proceedings and affirmative immigration matters.

This position is part of Oregonโ€™s Immigrant Justice Fellowship through Equity Corps of Oregon (ECO). The Immigration Attorney is employed by ASN and must satisfy all ECO fellowship eligibility requirements.

The position is primarily based at ASNโ€™s Beaverton office and will also spend substantial time at the ECO office in downtown Portland conducting clinics, meeting with clients, participating in trainings, and supporting ECOโ€™s universal-representation work. The Immigration Attorney will help strengthen ASNโ€™s developing immigration legal-services capacity and connect community members with high-quality, culturally responsive representation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct immigration legal screenings and intakes in person, by telephone, and virtually; provide advice, referrals, limited services, or representation as appropriate.
  • Represent eligible clients in removal proceedings and affirmative immigration matters before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, immigration courts, and other relevant agencies.
  • Prepare and file applications, motions, briefs, declarations, supporting evidence, and other legal documents accurately and on time.
  • Interview clients and witnesses, investigate facts, conduct legal research, develop case strategy, and maintain regular communication with clients.
  • Participate in ECO clinics, case rounds, trainings, workshops, and other fellowship activities at the ECO office and at community locations.
  • Deliver Know Your Rights presentations, legal-information sessions, and community education in partnership with ASN, ECO, and other community-based organizations.
  • Collaborate with interpreters, ASN staff, ECO attorneys, partner organizations, and community leaders to ensure accessible and culturally responsive services.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, timely, and confidential client records, case notes, timekeeping, and program data in required case-management systems.
  • Follow professional-responsibility rules, confidentiality requirements, ECO program standards, grant requirements, and ASN policies and procedures.
  • Support program development, outreach, referral systems, resource development, and other projects that strengthen ASNโ€™s immigration legal-services capacity.
  • Participate in occasional evening or weekend clinics, trainings, and community events, and travel within Oregon as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from an accredited law school by the fellowship start date and either membership in good standing in the bar of any U.S. state or recent completion of a state bar examination with results pending. Oregon State Bar members may receive preference.
  • No more than six years of work experience as a licensed attorney.
  • Professional fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by immigrant community members in Oregon.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public-interest law, social justice, and serving immigrant communities.
  • Strong legal research, writing, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.

The Afghan Support Network offers a competitive benefits package that supports the well-being and work-life balance of our employees.

  • 12 paid holidays per year
  • Generous paid time off and sick leave policies
  • Comprehensive medical and dental insurance fully covered by ASN
  • Supportive and inclusive work culture recognized as one of the Best nonprofit to Work in 2024 by Business Oregon & Best Place to Work honoree 2026 by Portland Business Journal.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and community impact

The Afghan Support Network is committed to diversity and equal opportunity, encouraging applications from all individuals, including those from refugee and immigrant communities.
